This week, BRNKL by Barnacle Systems is exhibiting on the global stage at CES 2019 alongside other Canadian companies at the Canadian Pavilion in Las Vegas.

BRNKL Photo AlertBarnacle Systems Inc. has reinvented how people check on their boats. Their product, BRNKL (pronounced barnacle), is like a “home security system for your boat” allowing users to check in on their vessel remotely from their smartphone, tablet, or computer.

Unlike marine electronics that provide monitoring while you’re on board, BRNKL has a built-in global cellular connection that transmits data from your boat to the BRNKL mobile app. Based in Victoria, BC, and founded in July of 2017, Barnacle Systems has already seen success locally as VIATEC’s 2018 “Startup of the Year”. VIATEC is the one-stop hub that connects people, knowledge and resources to grow and promote the Greater Victoria technology sector.

BRNKLBarnacle Systems is now being thrust into the global spotlight having been given the privilege to represent Canada at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2019. Barnacle Systems will be exhibiting BRNKL in the Canadian Pavilion as a Delegate of Canada. As “The Global Stage for Innovation,” with more than 4,500 exhibiting companies and 182,000 industry professionals from around the world, CES has served as the proving ground for innovators and breakthrough technologies for 50+ years.

The Barnacle Systems’ founding team consists of Vancouver Island locals. Brandon Wright grew up in Comox and completed Electrical Engineering at the University of Victoria. Sean Battistoni, having also graduated from the University of Victoria, grew up in Victoria and managed Marina Operations for the Oak Bay Marine Group. Nick Van Doorn, the team’s software lead, grew up in Victoria and lives by the mantra “talk is cheap, show me the code.”

BRNKL InstallationWhile at CES 2019, Brandon will be able to keep an eye on his own boat located in Mill Bay. Through the BRNKL app he will be able to see inside of his vessel, receive GPS alerts, and know the status of his batteries, shore power connection and most importantly know if water is entering his boat. Having deployed systems as far away as Portugal, boaters from around the world are now gaining peace of mind due to this new innovation.

Installing BRNKL takes generally between an hour and four hours depending on the complexity of the boat. The most time-consuming activity is running wires. The system is installed most commonly beside a vessel’s main breaker panel where the boat owner or marine electrician is simply running small sensing wires from house and starter battery signals, bilge or float switch signals, shore power connections and other critical systems on the boat back to the BRNKL. A BRNKL unit comes fully equipped with all of the sensors built-in to the unit, so no external devices are needed to monitor these critical systems.

BRNKL is available today from Barnacle Systems’ website, www.BRNKL.io. The product MSRP is $995 for the All-in-One and $1145 for the External Camera version. A global cellular subscription provided by Barnacle Systems is required and MSRP is $29/mo. or $300/yr.
