Some Timely Advice
November 5, 2026
It’s been pandemonium! : Most years, Clock Change Night arrives, your dog gets mad that his feeding schedule is messed up, you feel groggy for a day, and that’s that.
Not this year. It’s ongoing hullabaloo about time changes, adjacent provinces, expert opinions and relentless blather. Not just in Lloydminster or Kenora, it’s incessant time change headlines everywhere.
My concern is that adopting full-year Standard Time would put the Canadian boating season in big trouble. Picture onboard evening dinner in the dark next August. Or Wednesday night racing with running lights. The summer is short enough, then gets shorter until as we approach Labour Day. By the middle of August, we can barely fit in two legs of racing and that cockpit picnic operates by candlelight. If Ontario retains Daylight Savings, sunset on Wednesday Aug 25, 2027 will be at 8:07, but if the province opts for permanent Standard Time, that will be 7:07! That’s still almost two months before haulout.
As it NOW stands BC, Alberta and Manitoba have adopted permanent Daylight Savings. Not Saskatchewan, which is permanent Standard. Kenora is in Ontario but now lives on Manitoba time, ie permanent Daylight, but not the rest of Ontario, Quebec or the Atlantic which still switch twice a year for now but currently is entertaining change.
The problem is that so-called experts and some politicians are agitating for full time Standard Time, which will improve winter mornings but will essentially shut down evening boating east of Manitoba in mid-August.
