Salish Sea Marinas Throw Collective Big Party for National Marina Day, June 14

National Marine Day

Fun activities include boat rides, dinghy races, paddle board instruction, free kayak rentals, vessel safety checks, beer gardens, live music and more. As part of a nationwide observance, more than a dozen Puget Sound marinas and one in British  Columbia are celebrating Welcome to the Water on National Marina Day on Saturday June 14th, 2014 with a plethora of free festivities and activities open to the public.

Activities include: vessel safety checks, BBQs, live music, knot tying classes, fishing lessons, sailboat rides, kayak lessons, games and raffles.

“We live in one of the greatest places in the country to boat, and local boaters know and appreciate that,” said George Harris, president, Northwest Marine Trade Association. “They are always ready to celebrate with a day on the water, but on this day we ask them to bring a non-boater out to share the experience. We hope they’ll enjoy the events and learn how fun and easy it can be to make boating a part of

their lives.”

At press time participating marinas and activities include:

Bainbridge Island – Eagle Harbor Waterfront Park

•             Vessel safety inspections by USCG Auxiliary Flotilla 48 and workshops on navigation, safety and knot tying.

•             Rigging workshops and sailing in Eagle Harbor with Bainbridge High School Sailing Team and Bainbridge Island Metropolitan Parks District and Yacht Clubs

•             Rides on the Electric Boat and a 36 foot canoe.

•             Demonstration of  marine flares by  Bob Schoonmaker  of the Chandlery at Winslow

•             Open house on the Bainbridge Island Police Department‘s Safe Boat and underwater ROV hull inspections by appointment

•             “Anchor with a local” workshop with Harbor Commissioners and Stewards (by pre-arrangement)

•             Open house and activities at Bainbridge Island Rowing

•             Free hot dogs

Bowen Island, B.C.

•             Round Bowen Sailboat Race (the largest single start race on the West coast)

•             Taste of Bowen Island: music, craft market, hiking tours, kayak rentals and a tour of the local marinas and historic sites

•             Round Bowen Kayak Challenge: open to kayaks,canoes, stand-up paddleboards and outriggers as solo or relay teams. (Sunday June 15th)

Bremerton Marina – Friday and Saturday
