Sail Canada 2014 49er Boat Grant Program
With the aim of bringing younger sailors into the Canadian 49er class, Pitch Pole Skiff Products (aka 49er.ca) will be providing charter boats to young sailors interested in sailing the Olympic class 49erFX skiff. The charter boats will be a complete 49erFX with dolly, a carbon mast and ready to race for a period of one year. This is a perfect opportunity for young Laser, C420 or 29er sailors, both male and female, looking to make the jump into the exciting 49er or 49erFX class!

The boating industry is very sad to mark the unexpected passing of Blake Nicholls on November 25th. Blake opened Nicholls Marine on Niagara Blvd in Fort Erie in 1956. Beloved husband of the late Miranda “Patricia” (2005). Loving father of Timothy (Judy) Nicholls, Cathy Lewis and Penny (Jeff) Shaw. Cherished grandfather of Nicole and Adam Lewis, Brent, Alison and Christina Nicholls and Olivia Shaw. Sadly missed by his sisters Lynn Edwards and Elaine King and many nieces and nephews.

Diane Reid Experiences Equipment Problems in the Mini Transat Race Across the Atlantic
Diane Reid is the first Canadian woman to take part in the challenging Mini Transat race from France to the Caribbean across the Atlantic Ocean in a 6.5m (21′) sailboat. Stormy weather delayed the start for weeks. She had already stopped in Portugal to repair boat damage, with strict time limits. A week into the race Diane Reid’s mast broke and she jury-rigged her mast and was sailing to the Canary Islands for more repairs.

The Marriage Of The New Moody DS 54
The deck is mounted on the new Moody DS 54 – a process known as the “marriage” among boat builders. The long-awaited moment is finally here and the joining of the hull and the deck is complete: this important step is known as the “marriage” among boat builders! In the weeks leading up to the marriage, the builders were hard at work on the interior construction of the new Moody DS 54. The engine, tanks, electrics and, last but not least, the furniture were installed.

Mini Transat Race Progress – On The Road to Sada
This race is going to go down in history as an epic tale. It has been filled with incredible weather anomalies, rerouting, and resurrections! The delivery of the fleet from Gijon Spain to Sada Spain has lived up to these new expectations of the 2013 Mini Transat! After numerous days of discussion and round table collaberations within the fleet and the race organizers, the Mini Transat fleet finally had a decision as to the state of affairs and how we would get the fleet from Gijon to Sada.

The First Monumental Pole Raised in Gwaii Haanas in 130 Years
More than 400 people participated today in the raising of the Gwaii Haanas Legacy Pole, a 42-foot monumental pole that celebrates 20 years of cooperative management since the signing of the Gwaii Haanas Agreement by the Haida Nation and the Government of Canada. Winner of Naden’s Pink Boat
Well they did it! Or we should say that the wonderful dealers for Naden Boats did it, along with the volunteers at the CBCF North Bay group. The Naden Pink Boat Tour 2013 raised $19,590 for Breast Cancer Research. The winner of the Pink Boat is Michel Mino, a boater from Northern Ontario, so the Pink Boat will remain in the North.Even with the short boating/ summer season in Northern Ontario the Naden Dealers pulled through and made this event a succes in 2.5 months. Eight dealers participated in 14 events and the little boat travelled 15,000 km all summer.

Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show Enjoys Big Opening Day
The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show opened under partly cloudy skies Thursday as the biggest show yet in the event’s 54-year history and, judging by show-goer comments, one of the best.Howard Blitstein timed his visit from Costa Rica to see his mother in Fort Lauderdale with the boat show. “It’s very busy for the first day,” he said. “I’ve seen a lot of new center console-type boats that I never heard of. Gill Sells the Majority Stake in its Clothing Company to YFM
The undisclosed sum of money paid to Douglas Gill International to YFM Equity Partners is intended to back their existing management team. Gill was established in the 1975 by Nick Gill who started up the business in his father’s Nottingham lace factory. The Gill business makes technical sailing clothing and accessories and exported to more than 35 countries and last year and won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade. Gill employs more than 40 staff at its Long Eaton site.

ABYC Electrical Certification Course Offered in December 2013 by NSBA
There will be a four-day ABYC Electrical Certification course taking from Monday, December 9th through to Thursday, December 12th, 2013 in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Facilitator will be Ed Sherman. The course is designed for the marine technician with at least three to five years’ experience working with marine electricity. The student also needs some familiarity with ABYC electrical standards.

The Maritime Museum of BC is Looking for Stories From World War II Convoys
One of the biggest maritime tragedies in World War II is the story of convoy PQ-17 which carried relief supplies to the Russians. In July 1942, this convoy travelling from Iceland to Russia was attacked by German forces. Upon receiving intelligence, the escorts were ordered to withdraw and 22 out of the 33 ships in the convoy were sunk. The merchant sailors didn’t have the capacity to defend themselves and 153 men were killed. Winston Churchill described the incident as “one of the most melancholy naval episodes in the whole of the war.”
