Six Metre Reunion and Celebration – Great Memories and Great Fellowship
On Sunday April 28th, fifty Six Metre devotees gathered at the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club to celebrate the history of this famous class. This was the third in a series of four Heritage Luncheons in honour of the 125th anniversary of the founding of the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club, and this event focused on that amazing period in the late 1940s to the early 1960s when the Six Metre was the premier racing yacht on Lake Ontario, and when nine of these exceptionally beautiful boats sailed out of RHYC.

Susan Hood Trophy Race Participants Battled Mother Nature
The Susan Hood Race kicked off last Friday night with quite a bang, if you count the sound of signs being blown over by the wind. The racers were greeted with heavy winds and rain and with the potential for more storms over the next 24 hours. The Susan Hood is an annual race held by the Port Credit Yacht Club that covers 73 nautical miles of the western part of Lake Ontario. The race begins at 8pm and boats race from Port Credit to Burlington, then across the lake to Niagara and then back to the starting point. Although usually extremely cold, this race is considered an essential practice for anyone considering entering in the Lake Ontario 300 Race. The Lake Ontario 300, circumnavigates 300 nautical miles and it is considered one of the premiere races on the Lakes. This event will be held on July 13th also hosted by the Port Credit Yacht Club.

Susan Hood Trophy Race 2013
The Susan Hood Trophy Race is run by the Port Credit Yacht Club and is scheduled to run on Friday, May 31st at PCYC. Boats typically are back at PCYC mid day or during the afternoon of the following day. This is the first great race of the season Since 1955, fully crewed yachts have been taking the challenge of a spring offshore race. The Susan Hood is a great race to shake down your boat and crew for the 2013 season.

Artemis Capsizes; Olympic Medalist Simpson Dies
America’s Cup: Second AC72 capsize – Coastguard to lead inquiry Andrew Simpson (36), was a Strategist for Artemis Racing – Sander van der Borch_- Artemis Racing © Video shown on a local TV Channel shows the boat completely upside down, and with the wingsail smashed, in a similar outcome to that which occurred on the October 6, 2012 incident with Oracle Team USA. The incident occurred just before 1.00pm Pacific time on Thursday, May 9th.

Chester Race Week – August 14th to 17th, 2013
Perhaps one of the world’s best kept secrets is Chester Race Week, held in Chester, Nova Scotia, just a stone’s throw away from the bustling metropolis of Halifax. Chester Race Week (scheduled August 14-17, 2013) has been sailing since 1856 and in recent summers has had consistent entries of 130-150 yachts. The regatta is run on three different race courses within the confines of the waters of Mahone Bay, surrounded by beautiful pine-tree covered granite islands dotted throughout the bay. Sailing could not be more convenient, especially since the time to the race course (always a big consideration after a long evening out the night before with friends!) is usually 30 minutes maximum! Race Week 2013 will take place from Wednesday, August 14th to Saturday, August 17th.

Four Days of Challenging Point-to-Point Sail Racing – Race the Cape
With the historic Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race leaving Massachusetts July 7th, followed by the Bluenose Ocean Racing Circuit’s departure from Halifax to St Peters on July 13th, Eastern Seaboard sailors will be ready for the inaugural Race the Cape starting in St Peters, Cape Breton on July 17th. Race the Cape is four days of challenging point-to-point sail racing, both inland and coastal ocean, broken into four legs of up to 40 nautical miles through the Bras d’Or and along the Atlantic coast of Cape Breton Island. Race the Cape is an International Sailing Federation – Off Shore Special Regulations (OSR) Category 4 Race, generally sailed during daylight hours. There are both Spinnaker and Non-Spin Divisions.

Steve Killing – Sailing These Rockets is Not For the Fainthearted
Steve Killing, the guest speaker at the annual Midland Huronia Museum Heritage Dinner, gave the attendees a unique perspective on vessel design on 03 May. Beginning with 19th century ship design, he morphed the cod head and mackerel tail formula used by designers in the early 1800’s into the modern mono hull design, which uses exactly the opposite approach with narrow forward and broad after sections. He then launched into some of his current projects, space age high tech catamarans, capable of speeds in excess of 40 knots.

CPS-ECP Flag Relay Kicked Off May 5th at Windsor Yacht Club
1938 was the year that Canadian Power & Sail Squadrons (CPS-ECP) started its journey. Three members of the Windsor Yacht Club took the Junior Piloting Course at the Detroit Power Squadron in 1937 and instructed the first course in Windsor in 1938. In honour of this 75th milestone in our history, two specially designed CPS anniversary flags arrived by boat from the United States depicting where we grew from. These flags were delivered by USPS Chief Commander John Alter, SN and received by CPS Chief Commander Richard Bee, AP on May 5 at the Windsor Yacht Club.

Your Help Could Save a Life
North American Safe Boating Awareness Week will take place across Canada from May 18th to May 24th, 2013. The purpose of this initiative is to promote safe and responsible boating practices to the estimated 16 million recreational boaters in Canada while significantly reducing boating-related fatalities. To help increase awareness of Safe Boating Awareness Week, on May 18th, 2013, boating safety educators, marine enforcement officials, politicians, media and the general public in Canada and around the world will gather to beat last year’s World Record Life Jacket event called Ready, Set, Wear It (RSWI). As well, the Canadian Safe Boating Council and local Police Marine Units in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal will be hosting three launch events for media, public and boating safety educators to increase awareness of the importance of Boating Safety!

Good Weekend Weather Brings Strong Crowds in Victoria
Good weather brought out strong weekend crowds at the BC Yacht Brokers Association Victoria Floating Boat Show April 18-21. Lagoon Cove’s Bill Barber Dies at 78
For the past 20 years or so, no cruise to the Broughtons was complete without a visit to Lagoon Cove Marina for a taste of the hospitality and charm of its owners, Bill and Jean Barber. Broughtons regulars were saddened to learn of Bill’s death in early April at age 78 after a recurrence of cancer. Bill’s bottomless buckets of prawns, tall tales and laconic humour brought cruisers back to Lagoon Cove season after season. He and Jean also took a lead in promoting the Broughtons as a cruising destination, working with nearby marina operators to get this unique destination on BC and Washington State cruisers’ radar.

Taking the Helm at Grand Yachts
With nine Grand Banks 36 models for sale – from a 1970 wooden classic to a 2001 wide-body that was the third-last GB 36 built – Grand Yachts invited prospective buyers to “take the helm” of these boats at their sales docks in Coal Harbour and Port Sidney on March 23. Broker Alan McKillop said the event succeeded in introducing visitors to the 36 and to Grand Banks in general. “We wanted to give people the opportunity to experience a GB and understand why they have become legendary. We had people from a wide background, including sailors looking to move to power, people looking to move up in size, people who had heard of Grand Banks never had the chance to cruise on one, and the generally curious,” said McKillop. “I think people enjoyed getting out in the boats and seeing how they handle, seeing why Grand Banks are the legendary boats that they are.”

Canada Day Regatta in Sointula
The village of Sointula invites sailors and powerboaters to join its Canada Day Regatta June 30 and July 1. The regatta features fun sail and predicted-log racing on the waters off Malcolm Island, along with a marina market, marine swap, dragon boat rides and children’s events, a Canada Day cake-cutting ceremony and a beer garden. Registration is $25 and proceeds go to the local Friends In Need Now (FINN) fund, which assists with expenses related to medical appointments.

Rendezvous Season is Here
The coming of summer means rendezvous season on the West Coast, with yacht clubs, owners’ associations and boatbuilders staging events at popular destinations on the South Coast. Gibsons builder Coastal Craft stages its owners’ rendezvous May 17-19 at Poets Cove Resort, South Pender Island. All Chris-Crafts “regardless of age, type or condition” are invited to the 2013 Chris-Craft BC Rendezvous July 19-21 at Telegraph Harbour Marina, Thetis Island.

Classics Afloat and Ashore at Burrard YC
North Vancouver’s Burrard Yacht Club invites the public to view a huge array of classic wooden yachts and mint collector cars at its seventh annual Classic Boat and Car Show Saturday, June 8. The event is a fundraiser for the Disabled Sailing Association of BC. The focus of this year’s boat show is classic wooden Grand Banks yachts of all sizes, which will join other classics on the club docks. Meanwhile, 40 to 50 collector cars will be on display in the club parking lot; up to 100 more classic cars are expected to drive by through the day. Weather permitting, the club will also offer free 30-minute sailing lessons for children aged eight to 15.

2013 WOW Regatta
Since 2008, over 600 women have attended WOW boating events. On Saturday June 22nd WOW is having it’s 3rd annual WOW Regatta (for women only). So if you have never raced before or race all the time, this will be The Regatta to attend. Women racing women; bring your boat or crew with someone else, racing cost is $25 per person which includes a goodie bag. There will be a crew bank posted on Facebook. Guelph couple wins Mariposa Cruises’ $15,000 on board wedding contest prize!
The wedding dreams of Guelph couple David Kellman and Crystal Roy came true this week when Mariposa Cruises announced they had won its Facebook contest prize, a $15,000 wedding on the water. The couple has chosen to be married this year aboard Mariposa Cruises’ beautiful Klancy II. Crystal, originally from Brampton, met David almost five years ago by chance at Guelph bar, Trappers Alley. They hit it off right away and as the saying goes – the rest is history. The couple were engaged in November 2012, but thought they would only be able to afford a small wedding – until now. “The day I found out, I was laughing and crying at the same time. I couldn’t hold my phone still to show David the announcement from Mariposa Cruises,” said Crystal Roy. “We are so happy and excited!”

Heritage Pt 3 – 1814 – War on the Upper Lakes
The United States strategic plan for 1814 was to gain control of Lake Ontario, capture Burlington and York then retake Fort Niagara. That didn’t happen. The intent on the Upper Lakes was to retake Michilimackinac and the destruction of the North West Company trading posts and the two brigs being built up the river at Matchedash. The British goal on the Upper Lakes to protect the fur trade, its supporting infrastructure and the Indian alliances remained unchanged throughout the War.

Heritage Pt 2 – Prelude to War on the Upper Lakes
The main supply route from Britain to Upper Canada during the war was by ship to Montreal, then by boat along the St. Lawrence River to Prescott or Kingston and onwards to York and Niagara by schooner on Lake Ontario. Control of the sea was necessary to secure these routes in wartime but the nondescript collection of coast guard like Provincial Marine vessels that existed on the Lakes during peacetime in the early 1800’s was no match for an enemy naval force during times of war. Both navies used the following three types of vessels on the Great Lakes during the War. The tall ships still use these main types or variations on the theme.

Fast Yachts 1812 to 2012 Celebrated at Heritage Evening
Huronia Museum hosts its Annual Heritage Dinner at the North Simcoe Recreation Centre on May 3rd with guest speak, Steve Killing, discussing the theme of Fast Yachts 1812 to 2012. The talk will cover the historical quest for speed under sail, when your life depended on it, to the recreational quest for speed, where sailors just behave like their life depends on it. In particular the move from single-hulled vessels to double-hulled catamarans saw a huge leap in speed potential, so large that the New York Yacht club outlawed, for over 100 years, any boat with more than one hull. Current projects to be discussed include two catamarans for different clients that are using modern materials and outlandish concepts to push the speed barriers. Sailing with crash helmets, and flying over the water is the norm in this new breed of boats.

Heritage Pt 1 – Historical Tall Ships Tour Provides Opportunity To Revisit Great Lakes History
This year there will be several events commemorating the 200th anniversary of the second year of the War of 1812. The Huronia Museum’s focus will be the war on Lakes Huron and Michigan, as the struggle for control of these lakes had the greatest impact on Huronia. The Museum’s newest exhibit “The Birth of Simcoe County and the War of 1812″ introduces the subject and shows the impact of the War on the founding of the town of Penetanguishene. This display gives a good background on the part that the local area played in the events that took place on the Lakes before, during and after the War. The tall ships will also visit the Lakes to commemorate the Anniversary and will re-enact naval battles on the Lakes. Some of these

In the last few months Bruce Kirby, the Canadian designer of the Laser sailboat, the world’s most successful racing dinghy ever, and the one-design boat that powers arguably the largest and most significant class in racing, has revealed that for some time, he has not been paid the royalties owed to him by the builders who had contracts to build Kirby’s design. Yet, the authorities in the Laser class association with the apparent cooperation of ISAF, the International Sailing Federation have continued to issue official plaques to these unauthorized Laser boats. The series of events would seem to undermine the whole concept of one-design sailing and racing. New “Kirby Torch” Replaces The Laser – Production To Come To Canada
Bruce Kirby, a Canadian and the original designer of the Laser is launching the “Kirby Torch”. The Laser sailboat is no longer in production in North America and Europe and because the Laser trademark is being held by the former builder, the boat’s name had to be changed in order for Bruce Kirby’s design to continue to be sold world-wide as a One Design class. The newly-christened Kirby Torch has a very Canadian focus. The Laser started in Canada, quickly becoming an IYRU-recognized international class in 1974. Then in 1983, the original builder went bankrupt and rights to the design reverted to Bruce Kirby Inc.

The 2013 Moncton Boat Show Cruises Out a Winner!
The owners of the Moncton Boat Show, Master Promotions Ltd. are pleased to announce that the 2013 edition of New Brunswick’s largest boat show was a resounding success! Saturday attendance was off the charts. Attendance was up over 12% and broke the 10,000 mark during the course of the three day event. Saturday attendance was outstanding and the atmosphere almost electric in the Moncton Coliseum.

Third Annual Penobscot Bay Rendezvous-Join the Party!
What a party! August 15-18, 2013 the Penobscot Bay Rendezvous is on the map as one of the East Coast’s best regattas for power and sail. Last year, fifty-five sail and power boats gathered for the four-night three-day event co-hosted by Wayfarer Marine and Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding.
