Gear: Smartplug cordsets: easier, more efficient

Smartplug Cordsets

June 9, 2022

When the twist-type connector was invented in 1938, production boats were made of wood and didn’t have power-hungry electrical components. In today’s vessels, utilizing state-of-the-art materials and technologies is the norm, including the revolutionary SmartPlug Dual Configuration Cordset. The unique SmartPlug design is safer, easier to use and more efficient than traditional shore power connectors to handle heavy loads from air conditioners, appliances, electronics such as radar and night vision cameras, bilge pumps and TVs.

SmartPlug Dual Configuration Cordsets are available in 30A 125V and 50A 125V/250V. They have a sturdy pin and clip design that delivers over 27 times more metal-to-metal contact than standard twist-type connectors. This design decreases electrical resistance, overheating and the potential for arcing. For additional safety, built-in LED lights alert the user if the shore power pedestal is improperly wired and may pose a dangerous reverse polarity situation.

The SmartPlug cordset can be connected with one hand, even in the dark. There’s no L-blade to align or rings to thread. The asymmetrical connector pushes straight into the inlet and is secured with dual side-locking levers. IP56-rated, superior weatherproof seals eliminate dirt and moisture exposure on the electrical pins.

Dual Configuration Cordsets feature cable with a durable outer casing that’s highly resistant to abrasion and UV damage, while remaining flexible enough to coil easily, even in freezing weather. They have fully-tinned wire for maximum durability and minimal corrosion.

For boat owners with existing twist-type connectors, it’s easy to upgrade to a SmartPlug system using common household tools. The inlet’s mounting holes and screw pattern match those of the existing boat-side device. SmartPlug offers a choice of 316 stainless steel or non-metallic white, gray or black models. Matching ELCI and phone/TV/data link inlets are available.

EL-approved, SmartPlug 30A 125V and 50A 125V/250V Dual Configuration Cordsets are available in 25′ and 50′ lengths and come with a seven-year warranty.

New Boats: Beneteau Oceanis 34.1 – A Sleek, Good -Looking Delight To Sail

By Katherine Stone

There is nothing more that I enjoy than being with friends and messing about in boats. Messing about in brand-new boats on a champagne sailing day on Lake Ontario at the beginning of the summer doesn’t get any better. To have the new owner, Helmuth Strobel and Anchor Yachts dealer Pancho Jimenez aboard made it even more special, as they can also speak to what they truly enjoy about the boat. We keep our own boat in a harbour that has a long waiting list for boats over 35 feet, so this little gem would definitely fit the bill and feels like a much bigger boat. True to the spirit of the 7th generation Oceanis line, the 34.1 is built in Poland and replaces the 35.1. It is 1,000 lbs lighter, 14 cm narrower and has 29% more sail area.
