National Sailing Hall of Fame Announces 2012 Inductees

The National Sailing Center & Hall of Fame (NSHOF) has announced the nine sailors who will make up its 2012 class of inductees into the National Sailing Hall of Fame. Following a two-month period this spring during which sailors from all corners of the country nominated their choice for induction, a selection committee – made up of representatives from the national governing body, the sailing media, the sailing industry, community sailing, a maritime museum, NSHOF founding yacht clubs and the 2011 class of inductees – reviewed the broad spectrum of nominations.

Boat Show at Mosquito Creek September 22-25

Mosquito Creek Marina’s 6th annual Boat Show at the Creek promises to bring at least 150 power and sailboats to the North Shore facility. Sponsored by the BC Yacht Brokers Association, this is the South Coast’s major fall floating boat show. Exhibits also include marine vendors and suppliers “on the water” in booths on a floating platform. Show features this year include moorage for show-goers who arrive by boat ($25 per day plus special fuel dock rates), dedicated slips for sea-trial use and quiet rooms for broker-client meetings, daily educational seminars on site, children’s activities and canoe races.

Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre – Kayak and Canoe Building Courses

These popular multi-day courses are being offered in September and October 2012 at the Maritime Centre in Cowichan Bay. The kayak is a 16’ Resolute model, while the canoe is a 15’ Freedom model, both designed by Steve Killing. Depending on attendance, multiple examples will be built by the participants. During the program they will learn all the steps of building a cedar-strip vessel. This includes interpreting drawings, setting up molds, building the keel and stems and forming the hull from bead-and-cove cedar strips. Fiberglass and epoxy will complete the hull. Following the “turn over” the class will lean the installation of coamings, seats, thwarts, and gunwales, and other finishing components.

Cleanup Time!

We all hate seeing litter on our favourite beaches and shorelines. You can pitch in and do something about the mess during the annual Great Canadian Shore Cleanup September 15-23. Volunteers are invited to join this year’s 18th annual cleanup, sponsored by Vancouver Aquarium and World Wildlife Fund Canada. You can join an existing cleanup, or lead a new cleanup as site coordinator on a shoreline near you. The aquarium has led cleanups since 1994, when volunteers swept a shoreline in Vancouver’s Stanley Park. The program has operated nationally since 2002.

Royal Canadian Marine SAR Ladysmith Station 29 Recruiting

Station 29 is sponsored by the Ladysmith and District Marine Rescue Society and provides marine search and rescue services for the northern section of the Gulf Islands, including the islands and waters between Dodd Narrows to the north and Sansum Narrows to the south. The 24 active members provide 24/7 response for marine emergencies as well as community education and public safety services. Their current response vessel is a 25’ Zodiac Hurricane RIB and the society is currently fundraising to purchase a new response vessel in 2014. This vessel, to be built on Vancouver Island, will greatly enhance operational and medical first aid responsiveness.

Seattle’s Lake Union Boats Afloat Show

Seattle’s 34th annual Lake Union Boats Afloat Show begins Wednesday, September 12 and continues through Sunday, September 16, 2012. The show is open from 11 am to 7 pm weekdays and 10 am to 6 pm weekends. More than 50 brands of yachts and 50 brokers and dealers from Washington, Oregon, California, Florida, and British Columbia will display their yachts. Yachts represented will include Ocean Alexander, Selene, Westport, Kadey-Krogen, American Tug, Regal, Jeanneau, Navigator, Hunter, Catalina, Riviera, Sea Ray and many more.

SALTS Receives Yacht Donation – Plans New Ship

Victoria-based SALTS (Sail and Life Training Society) has received a donation of a 69’ yacht recently appraised at $1 million. Florida-based businessman and philanthropist James C. Ray donated his sloop Tango which is moored in Sidney. SALTS is now seeking a buyer for the yacht so funds gained from the sale can be used to help construct a new 140-foot wooden schooner. The new ship will provide sail training to teens and young adults alongside the society’s two existing ships. Ray’s private foundation has also pledged an additional $250,000 toward the project to be given at a future date.

Boat for Hope Gets Pirates Out on the Water

Hundreds of pirates – and their parents – gathered at yacht clubs in Vancouver, Victoria and Kelowna in June for this year’s Boat for Hope. Hosted by Variety – the Children’s Charity, Boat for Hope offers children who have special needs and their families a fun, easy day of on-water pirating adventures, in which they board boats decked out in pirate gear and crewed by their owners, who truly dive into the spirit of the day. Vancouver’s Boat for Hope is in its 14th year and staged at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club with extensive support from club members, other yacht clubs and power squadrons. Boat for Hope is now also staged in Ireland and Australia.

WAVES Regatta Raises $175,000 for Easter Seals

The 2012 National Bank Easter Seals WAVES Regatta drew 169 dinghies and keelboats to Royal Vancouver Yacht Club June 23-24, raising $175,000 to support operations at Vancouver’s Easter Seals House. WAVES is produced annually by the BC Lions Society for Children with Disabilities in partnership with RVYC. Catch Me, skippered by Philip Cragg, won the Easter Seals Cup, while top fundraising sailor was once again Rick Reynolds, who secured $7,000 in boat sponsorships.

Martin 242 North Americans

Martin 242 Fleet One Vancouver hosts the class’s 2012 North American Championship September 21-23 on English Bay. The regatta has been expanded to three days to increase competitiveness and respect the distance travelled by racers from Vancouver Island, Alberta, Oregon and California. A BC design, the M242 is a highly competitive class that maintains strong fleets on the West Coast. Over 300 boats have been built since 1981 and are many are still competitive today.

Appointment of new CPS Executive Director

Richard Bee, Chief Commander of the Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons is pleased to report that the organization has completed the search process and hired a new Executive Director. Their new Executive Director is Walter Kowalchuk. He will be joining CPS-ECP on September 4, 2012. Walter was born and raised in Edmonton Alberta and moved to the Toronto area in 1984. He is married with two children. His wife Susan is the Program Manager with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peel.

Oil-Spill Centre Leaving BC

The federal government is closing BC's command centre for emergency oil spills at a time when the province is facing two possible pipeline projects and a potential spike in tanker traffic in West Coast waterways. Ottawa has said it will shut down BC's regional office for emergency oil-spill responders, located in Vancouver, and centralize operations in Quebec in the wake of the cost-cutting March 29 federal budget. The move could affect about 42 jobs in the BC-Yukon region.

National Bank Easter Seals Waves Regatta set to go June 34, 24 at Royal Vancouver Yacht Club

This year’s charity sailing event will feature one weekend of competitive Keelboat and Dinghy racing in English Bay as well as the recreational Easter Seals Cup race. Almost 200 boats participated last year and this year event organizers are hoping for close to 300 boats to take part. The post race festivities offer a chance for all participants to kick back and relax after the first full day of racing.

Heritage Boatshed Re-Opens With Gala Re-Launch

  After sitting idle and somewhat forlorn for over two years, the Heritage Wooden Boatshed at the Harbour of the Maritime Museum on Kits Point, Vancouver has been repaired and will have an official re-opening and launch party Sat April 14, noon to 4:00 PM. New Publisher Takes Helm of Waggoner Cruising Guide

For years, the Waggoner Cruising Guide has been among our favourite cruising resources, in particular for its comprehensive and authoritative listings of marinas, destinations and marine services. Robert Hale of Seattle launched the Waggoner and served as editor and publisher for almost 20 years, but has now handed the helm over to Anacortes-based publisher and writer Mark Bunzel. Not surprisingly, Bunzel has set out to make a great publication even better, starting with the 2012 edition, now on sale.
