Opposition Continues to Proposed Squirrel Cove Marina
A proposal to build a major marina resort in one of Desolation Sound’s most popular anchorages, Squirrel Cove, is again drawing fire from boaters who argue the development will significantly compromise the cove as an anchorage. After its original plan was rejected by the BC government last summer, Klahoose Resort Limited Partnership has submitted a scaled-down proposal for a marina and moorings targeting boats 45 to 90 feet and longer, as well as an aquaculture…

50th Vancouver Boat Show Sees Bigger Crowds, Positive Mood
Vancouver International Boat Show marked its 50th anniversary February 8-12 with increased attendance, enthusiastic crowds, and strong boat and equipment sales. Bluewater Cruising Hosts Author/Cruiser Beth Leonard
Circumnavigator and cruising author Beth Leonard visits Vancouver Island this month for a series of presentations hosted by the Bluewater Cruising Association. Pierre’s at Echo Bay Under New Management
Pierre and Tove Landry have purchased full ownership of the Echo Bay facility in the Broughton Archipelago. Known as Pierre’s at Echo Bay, this marine resort was previously jointly owned with Lucy and Jerome Rose, who have sold their interest to the Landry’s. Pierre’s at Echo Bay exhibited at both the Seattle and Vancouver boat shows in partnership with Port McNeil Fuel Dock and Marina – close by the CYW booth. Pierre is excited about future opportunities and looking forward to welcoming returning and new visitors to their fully modernized facility.

Torqeedo powering Ottawa ferry
Torqeedo, the Swiss based manufacturer of performance marine electric outboard motors has announced another successful installation. Aquabus is a new water taxi and tour service on the Ottawa and Gatineau Rivers in the Ottawa area that operates in the May to October season. Installing Torqeedo 4.0R motors matched with high performance, but ultra low weight Lithium batteries, the new ferries will have the equivalent of an 8 hp gas outboard that provides a steady cruise speed of 6 knots with a maximum of 12 knots.

Canada Metals Pacific Acquires Rocna Anchors
Canada Metals Pacific (CMP), the BC manufacturer of anodes and other marine products, recently announced their purchase of Rocna Anchors, formerly of New Zealand. CMP already manufactures a line of anchor chain and this acquisition complements this product offering. Rocna had already addressed a concern about product quality after reports of metal failure in a batch of their anchors built in Asia. Under the new Rocna ownership CMP has fully extended warranties on Rocna anchors to include bending as well as breakage. This will help boost confidence in the unique Rocna anchor design.

Shelter Island Adds Travel Lift, Expands Services
Shelter Island Marina has acquired the 150-ton Travel Lift from nearby Bracewell Marine Group and has expanded their marine services. Shelter Island is a full-service marina with a dedicated wash bay with the latest filtration and water-cleaning systems and a number of associated service providers. Services include boat cleaning and detailing, bottom painting, full mechanical, electrical and electronic systems installation and repair, and shipwright services in wood, fiberglass, steel and aluminum.

Xantrex is a leading west coast manufacturer of marine electrical equipment that is sold under a variety of brand names. To help customers learn more about the performance of its entire line, Xantrex has launched a new video service called Xantrex Tech Doctor Live. This online video service houses a full line of YouTube-based videos featuring their equipment, uses, installation and troubleshooting tips. CPS Boating Course On-line
Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons (CPS) has announced the introduction of a fully on-line self-study version of the Boating Basics course. Formerly called Boat-Pro if taught in classroom, this course prepares candidates to write an exam qualifying them for the Pleasure Craft Operator’s Card (PCOC). This certificate is mandated by Transport Canada and is the minimum certification needed to operate any powered vessel of any length in Canadian waters. Candidates who complete the Boating basics course are allowed to write the on-line examination that leads to the PCOC certification.

Vancouver International Boat Show Marks 50 Years in Style
Timing is everything. The Vancouver International Boat Show, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2012, could not have picked a better time to return to BC Place, and to move its In-Water Display to the ideal venue, Granville Island Marina. The show returns to BC Place after a two-year absence: in 2010 it was displaced by the Winter Olympics, which used the stadium for opening and closing ceremonies, while in 2011 renovations at BC Place shifted the show to the new Vancouver Convention Centre, a smaller venue. The show runs Wednesday to Sunday, February 8-12.

Industry Mourns the Loss of Ross Richardson
True North Yachts founding partner Ross Bryden Richardson, passed away peacefully at 9:50pm on Monday November 14th at Princess Margaret Hospital after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Ross was not an observer of life but rather one of its most active participants. He amazed everyone with his determination to win this fight and participated in both sporting and social events right up to the very end.

The Industry Mourns The Passing of Erich Bruckmann
Canadian Yachting has learned that Canadian boat builder Erich Bruckmann passed away on October 28, 2011. Erich was born in Dusseldorf Germany in 1930. He left Germany as a young man in 1956 to start a new life with his devoted wife and first son Peter. Within a year of arriving in Canada Erich began what would be a lifelong career as a boat builder.

Hunter Yachts Awards Canada’s Leading Sailboat Dealers
Canadian Dealers dominated world rankings recently in Annapolis with Hunter yacht's annual awards presentation held in conjunction with the Annapolis sailboat show. Canada held 3 out of the top ten rankings with Specialty Yachts of Vancouver (Lawrence Fronzcek), sixth, Marina Lennox of Quebec (Jean and Chantal Francois) second and True North Yachts (Allan Mestel) of Mississauga number One worldwide. MarineMax Launches New Vacation Charter Company
MarineMax Inc., North America's largest recreational boat and yacht retailer, is proud to announce the introduction of MarineMax Vacations, a charter program offering premium sail and power yacht vacations. As part of the program, the Company will also be offering a yacht ownership program for the charter fleet. The new venture begins with vessels from luxury sailboat builder Dufour Yachts. MarineMax is currently developing custom power boats for future vacation charters. The first charters are scheduled to begin December 2011 in the British Virgin Islands.

Skyline Marine Achieves Highest Dealer Certification Honour
In a letter from Andrew E. Graves, president of the Brunswick Boat Group, Skyline Marine received congratulations on becoming the first Brunswick Ambassador dealer, the highest dealer certification honor available through the Brunswick Boat Group under their new Brunswick certification program. Skyline was also reaffirmed as exclusively representing Sea Ray and Hatteras boats.

CYA Appoints Curtis Florence CYA’s Rolex Sailor of the Year Award
Last night, during CYA’s Annual General Meeting, Curtis Florence was appointed CYA’s Rolex Sailor of the Year Award during the Awards Dinner hosted by the Royal Canadian Yachting Club. Curtis’ two sons, Trey (16) and Jordan (12), were present to accept the award on behalf of their father. Curtis was able to make his gracious acceptance speech via SKYPE.
