Torqeedo powering Ottawa ferry

Torqeedo, the Swiss based manufacturer of performance marine electric outboard motors has announced another successful installation. Aquabus is a new water taxi and tour service on the Ottawa and Gatineau Rivers in the Ottawa area that operates in the May to October season. Installing Torqeedo 4.0R motors matched with high performance, but ultra low weight Lithium batteries, the new ferries will have the equivalent of an 8 hp gas outboard that provides a steady cruise speed of 6 knots with a maximum of 12 knots.

Canada Metals Pacific Acquires Rocna Anchors

Canada Metals Pacific (CMP), the BC manufacturer of anodes and other marine products, recently announced their purchase of Rocna Anchors, formerly of New Zealand. CMP already manufactures a line of anchor chain and this acquisition complements this product offering. Rocna had already addressed a concern about product quality after reports of metal failure in a batch of their anchors built in Asia. Under the new Rocna ownership CMP has fully extended warranties on Rocna anchors to include bending as well as breakage. This will help boost confidence in the unique Rocna anchor design.

CPS Boating Course On-line

Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons (CPS) has announced the introduction of a fully on-line self-study version of the Boating Basics course. Formerly called Boat-Pro if taught in classroom, this course prepares candidates to write an exam qualifying them for the Pleasure Craft Operator’s Card (PCOC). This certificate is mandated by Transport Canada and is the minimum certification needed to operate any powered vessel of any length in Canadian waters. Candidates who complete the Boating basics course are allowed to write the on-line examination that leads to the PCOC certification.

Vancouver International Boat Show Marks 50 Years in Style

Timing is everything. The Vancouver International Boat Show, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2012, could not have picked a better time to return to BC Place, and to move its In-Water Display to the ideal venue, Granville Island Marina. The show returns to BC Place after a two-year absence: in 2010 it was displaced by the Winter Olympics, which used the stadium for opening and closing ceremonies, while in 2011 renovations at BC Place shifted the show to the new Vancouver Convention Centre, a smaller venue. The show runs Wednesday to Sunday, February 8-12.

The Industry Mourns The Passing of Erich Bruckmann

Canadian Yachting has learned that Canadian boat builder Erich Bruckmann passed away on October 28, 2011. Erich was born in Dusseldorf Germany in 1930. He left Germany as a young man in 1956 to start a new life with his devoted wife and first son Peter. Within a year of arriving in Canada Erich began what would be a lifelong career as a boat builder.
