Sail West Regatta

After two days of rain the sunshine is very welcoming at the Sail West Regatta at the Wabamun sailing club located about one hour west of Edmonton.

With 86 registered athletes from Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta there are entries in the laser, radial, 4.7, C420, 2.4, 29er, and Optimist classes.

Wabamun Sailing ClubLilly padWinds were very light for the practice race but picked up to 10-15 knots with 1 metre waves for four races held on Saturday.

Races continue today, August 5 and tomorrow, August 6.

Making French FriesDay two of racing with only one race and then no wind so the kids had fun on the Lilly pad with plenty of sun and warm temperatures!!

They have done a fantastic job at Wabamun Sailing Club!!!

PRO Peter van Muyden pulled off four great races today in 6-10 knot breezes for a total of 9 races for all classes.

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
