The 50th Annual Round the County Race

RTC

May 9, 2017

On August 19 and 20 the 50th edition of one of Canada’s most interesting races gets underway. The RTC offers challenging and wildly varying conditions as boats circumnavigate Prince Edward County starting at the lighthouse in Brighton Bay and finishing at the Bay of Quinte Yacht Club in Belleville ON.

Established in 1967, The 110 NM course takes participants from Presquile Point Lighthouse, around Scotch Bonnet, Psyche Shoal, through the Upper Gap and westward along Adolphus Reach, northeast through Long Reach and westward through the Bay of Quinte to Belleville to greet the dawn.

A Friday night dinner and colourful Saturday morning flotilla through the Murray Canal leading to the start are traditions of the event.

For all this, the 2016 entry fee was $40! For 2017 registration info, NOR etc visit http://bqyc.ca/rtc.php.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
