Located in the popular tourist town of Baddeck the company hasa fuel dock and 14 marina slips with water, 15, 30 and 50 amp power, showers, laundry and that new necessity, secure wireless internet. 4 or 5 slips are available for transients, but it’s best to call ahead for space. Things get busy in Baddeck during the summer, especially during events such as “Race the Cape”. Baddeck Marine has a well-stocked marine store and is a full service yard with a range of trade skills available.

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
