Pender Island Campaign Protects Brooks Point

With the completion of a Pender Islands community fundraising campaign, a prime section of South Pender waterfront between Brooks and Gowlland Points has been protected as parkland.

The Pender Islands Conservancy Association has worked to preserve the points as parks, but a wedge of land between them remained in private hands until the Capital Regional District purchased it for $1.65 million in 2010. The purchase was contingent on the community raising just over $300,000 – and it reached this target in December, with Pender residents contributing more than half of the total, and final donations from the Islands Trust Fund, the Habitat Acquisition Trust, Environment Canada, and private donors.

Brooks Point, a short walk from Poets Cove Resort in Bedwell Harbour, is a unique natural environment known for its spectacular meadow of chocolate lilies and camas in the spring, its birdlife, and commanding views of Boundary Pass.
