Parks Canada Partnership Aims to Preserve Future of the Rideau Canal

Parks Canada has announced that it will be collaborating with environmental, municipal, recreational and business development organizations to better ensure the financial sustainability of the Rideau Canal. Gord Brown, Member of Parliament for Leeds—Grenville, on behalf of the Leona Aglukkaq, Canada’s Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, has launched a collaborative project to foster recreation, tourism and economic development throughout the Rideau Canal corridor.

“This partnering project reflects our Government’s desire to engage key stakeholders in a conversation about the future sustainability of the Rideau Canal,” said Brown. “I’m excited to start working on this common vision for the benefit of all communities along this World Heritage Site.”

On May 14, Minister Kent, in consultation with government MPs with ridings along the canal, announced that Parks Canada would freeze recreational lockage fees along Canada’s historic canals for three years at 2008 levels. During this time, Parks Canada plans to work with local Members of Parliament, community leaders and the tourism industry to develop and implement an improved operating model to ensure the long term financial sustainability of the canals operations on the system.

With the historic Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race leaving Massachusetts July 7th, followed by the Bluenose Ocean Racing Circuit’s departure from Halifax to St Peters on July 13th, Eastern Seaboard sailors will be ready for the inaugural Race the Cape starting in St Peters, Cape Breton on July 17th.

Race the Cape is four days of challenging point-to-point sail racing, both inland and coastal ocean, broken into four legs of up to 40 nautical miles through the Bras d’Or and along the Atlantic coast of Cape Breton Island.  Race the Cape is an International Sailing Federation – Off Shore Special Regulations (OSR) Category 4 Race, generally sailed during daylight hours.  There are both Spinnaker and Non-Spin Divisions.

Squirrel Cove Hearing Delayed to July 24

A public hearing on the controversial plan for a major new marina in Squirrel Cove has been rescheduled to July 24 at Gorge Hall, 1375 Robertson Road, Cortes Island. The hearing was originally scheduled for July 6. The hearing offers cruising boaters a final opportunity to oppose the development that would radically alter navigation and anchoring access in Squirrel Cove, one of Desolation Sound’s most popular anchorages. Squirrel Cove Marine Resort, proposed by the Klahoose First Nation, is nearing approval at federal, provincial and regional levels. SRD directors have given preliminary approval to a rezoning bylaw to permit the project, with the hearing a next step.

Bayfield Marine Turns 40 with Big April Events

Ron and Pat Reder started out in October 1984 across the road from where they are right now on the Bayfield River in Bayfield ON. The store front was about 10 x 20 and the rest of that side of the building was a stock room, wood finishing room, then behind that was more back stock and the lunchroom. Expanding every few years for the store front, then moving over to this new building five years ago, this year with Adam, Shelley, and Holly are carrying on the business.
