Ontario Sailing Offers Race Officer Courses This Month

Ontario Sailing

Mar 22, 2017

A one-day Level 1 Assistant Race Officer Course covers the duties and responsibilities of an ARO as well as basic compass skills, setting and maintaining start/finish lines, etc. Everyone is welcome to attend (pre-registration is required) and all participants earn their Assistant Race Officer certification. An ARO is capable of assisting in the running of a race as a member of the Race Committee crew of a regatta.

A two-day Level 1&2 Club Race Officer Prerequisite Seminar covers the Level 1 content above as well as the duties and responsibilities of leading a Race Management Team, regatta organization, compass skills, calculating race courses, etc. Everyone is welcome to attend (pre-registration is required) and all participants earn their ARO certification. Participants will also be credited with the prerequisite ‘CRO RM Seminar (prereq)’ required to apply for their Club Race Officer (CRO) certification.

All course participants receive a ‘Join the Race Committee Team’ training manual and are encouraged to bring a current edition of the Racing Rules of Sailing with them to the course.

CRO Certification requires participation in a two-day Level 1&2 Race Officer Prerequisite Seminar and experience as a Race Officer as well as the submission of an application and checklist (available on the Sail Canada website) for approval by the Ontario Sailing Race Management Committee. A CRO manages the ‘on-the-water’ activities of regattas at the club level.
