Humber Bay Sailing Centre has taken over the sailing school operations formerly run by Humber College and is now in it’s second year of operation. Below is an outline of Humber Bay Sailing Centre’ s course offerings for the Fall/Winter, ranging from one day seminars to multi-week programs covering sailing theory, navigation, diesel engine maintenance and sail trim…..lot’s to keep the winter sailor engaged.

The Centre, located at 100 Humber Bay Park Road West, Toronto on Mimico Harbour, offers these Sail Canada courses through the Fall and Winter:

Sail Canada Basic Cruising Theory: provides the theoretical (class room based) knowledge to be able to sail safely in familiar waters on a sloop rigged keelboat in moderate wind and sea conditions by day. Wednesday evenings, Jan 24 thru Feb 14.

Sail Canada Intermediate Cruising Theory: provides the theoretical knowledge to be able to cruise safely in familiar waters on a sloop rigged keelboat in moderate wind and sea conditions. Must have completed the Basic Cruising course, or have equivalent experience, before taking the Intermediate. Wednesday evenings, Oct 18 thru Nov 15…..OR…..Feb 21 thru Mar 21

Sail Canada Advanced Cruising Theory: provides the theoretical knowledge required to act as skipper on a sailing cruiser within 100 nautical miles of shore by day or night, in any kind of weather. Wednesday evenings, Dec 6 thru Jan 17.

Sail Canada Basic Coastal Navigation: introductory course offers basic knowledge of navigation theory. Prerequisite to Intermediate Cruising course. Mon and Thurs evenings, Oct 16 thru Nov 2….OR….Jan 29 thru Feb 15.
Sail Canada Intermediate Coastal Navigation: builds on the basic knowledge of the Basic Coastal Navigation course and is recommended for sailors who intend to bare boat charter. Mon and Thurs evenings, Feb 19 thru Mar 8.

In addition, the following courses are being offered:

International Certificate of Competency Theory: provides the theoretical knowledge to be able to operate as skipper/captain. An on-water, practical evaluation is required (course fee not included in this course). Mon and Thurs evenings, Feb 19 thru Mar 8.

Electronic Navigation Essentials:one day seminar covers the basics of electronic navigation and getting the most out of a chart pilot and auto pilots. Saturday January 6, 0930 to 1630.

Passage Making:one day seminar covers the basics of passage planning for local and Caribbean sailing. Sunday January 7, 0930 to 1630.

Sailboat Diesel Engine Maintenance: eight evening course delivers a common sense approach to diesel engine maintenance, including hands on troubleshooting, winterizing and commissioning procedures Wednesday evenings, Nov 15 thru Dec 20 or Feb 14 thru Mar 21

Performance Sail Trim: learn the skills of sail trim. Tuesday evenings, Jan 30 thru Mar 6

Destination: Trent Severn Waterway ONE MORE TIME!

Just when you thought you might never see the Galley Guys again, there they were waving from the flying bridge of a Le Boat Horizon 3 gliding down the Trent Severn Waterway (TSW) in the sun. Glorious!

In the past the Galley Guys have travelled far and wide to great locations to explore the good life on a boat. However, this year we stayed in our own backyard for a real treat; cruising The Trent Severn Waterway.
