To Halifax

June 11, 2026

Dartmouth NS Propeller Brewing Company has launched its Limited-Edition Wind Shift can to celebrate the 2026 Canada GP

It’s darn near impossible to walk through the Halifax waterfront without the strain of Stan Rogers singing Barrett’s Privateers blaring on your internal audio system. The Halifax waterfront is so stunning, so packed with history. It’s what makes the Nova Scotia capital important and evocative – a bedrock of Canadiana for centuries.

Super excitingly, next weekend it will be packed with Sail GP pandemonium. Two years ago, when the city enterprisingly got it anointed as this country’s Sail GP site, several other cities felt a cold wind that was the only breeze blowing their way when the pick was Halifax. There are still many in Toronto who are feverishly trying to move the event to the Big Smoke but HFX has already been announced as the 2027 venue.

Halifax doesn’t have a Major League ball team nor is it home to the Leafs (a possible blessing) but it does have this! Its harbour and downtown will be bumping with boaters and fans. The Bluenose II and scads of private boats will fill Halifax Harbour with spectators. It will definitely be a scene.

Who knows whether Sail GP will make boats as popular as Formula One has made the McLaren MCL40. But whether you’re a sailing zealot, a happy powerboater, or a lover of maritime ambience, it a significant thrill to see and hear the F50 catamarans achieve staggering speed in close combat.

The Halifax GP deserves to be nationally appreciated as a hugely important international event.

Pontoon boats began in the early 1950s as basically four steel drums lashed to a frame. They were not unlike the log rafts of ancient cultures and not much more sophisticated at first.

The Best of Two Worlds

By Mathew Channer

Interior British Columbia might not be as famous for recreational boating as Canada’s Great Lakes, yet it is no less a world-class boating destination. The mountains offer their own flavour of marine adventure with their series of long, deep ribbon lakes, and there is perhaps no area that embodies this more uniquely than the iconic Okanagan basin in southern B.C. One could be forgiven for assuming this valley was purpose-built for nautical fun, with a few delightful perks thrown in to make the area entirely irresistible (wine-tasting, anyone?).
