Blackline Patos Island Race 2017

Patos Race 1

Apr 11, 2017

It’s early in the season, but the results are in!

2017 is The 36th running of the Patos Island Race and is the first of 13 races that make up the Vancouver Island Racing Series. The long distance portion of the race is a qualifier for this year’s Van Isle 360 series of races.

The approximately 67 nautical mile long course for this year’s Patos Island Race had a bit of everything, from moderate winds, to no wind, to 20 knot winds to the finish and for the most part fighting against the current. The Short course faced similar conditions. Sailing into a whirlpool, sailing backwards, manovering around tankers and container ships and multiple sail changes are all part of what makes up a Patos Island Race.

Patos Race 2Jack Rabbit skippered by Colin Nichols from Canadian Forces Sailing Association takes first place in the Long Distance Race in Division 1 and also wins first over all honours.

In Division 2 Blue Shift skippered by Ron Turner took top honours and in Division 3 Plus Ten skippered by VeliLevaaho was 1st.

The 43 mile short course Division 1 was won by Honcho skippered by Rick Wunderlich. Honcho was also first overall in the Short Course.

Prairie Sun with John Windas at the helm was 1st in Division 2
