Cancelled: 2026 Safety Equipment Education and Flare Disposal Days

March 12, 2026

Due to the discontinued funding from Transport Canada, CanBoat / NautiSavoir, despite ongoing support from CIL Orion, will be unable to offer a flare disposal program this year.

As a non-profit organization, CanBoat relies on external funding to deliver this national safety initiative and does not have the financial capacity to operate the program independently.

We encourage boaters and marine retailers to contact their Members of Parliament to express the importance of this program and support the renewal of Transport Canada funding. CanBoat volunteers hosted 27 events and collected 38,863 expired flares in 2025.

Flares manufactured in 2022 or earlier expire this year, as Transport Canada approves them for four years. They should be replaced every third or fourth boating season.

To dispose of expired flares, do not light them, throw them overboard, or add them to household garbage.

To find an alternative disposal option consult your local marine retailer.

Pontoon boats began in the early 1950s as basically four steel drums lashed to a frame. They were not unlike the log rafts of ancient cultures and not much more sophisticated at first.

The mountains offer their own flavour of marine adventure with their series of long, deep ribbon lakes, and there is perhaps no area that embodies this more uniquely than the iconic Okanagan basin in southern B.C. One could be forgiven for assuming this valley was purpose-built for nautical fun, with a few delightful perks thrown in to make the area entirely irresistible (wine-tasting, anyone?).
