As Ontario’s waterways come alive after a long winter, boaters are eager to get back out and enjoy everything the new season has to offer. Before launching for your first adventure, it’s important to focus on preparation and safety — especially with cold water conditions still present across many lakes and bays.

A smart season start begins with a full maintenance check. Take time to inspect your boat, note any repairs or supplies needed, and book service appointments early. Mechanics and marinas quickly fill up once the season gets underway, so addressing potential issues now helps you avoid delays when the warmer weather hits.

Once maintenance is complete, turn your attention to trip planning. Even if you’re heading to familiar destinations, always map your route using current marine charts and GPS. Keep a hard copy of your charts onboard as a backup, and plan refueling stops if you’ll be traveling longer distances.

Weather plays a major role in early-season boating. Conditions can shift quickly in spring, and cold-water temperatures heighten the risk of sudden storms or mechanical trouble. Start tracking weather patterns several days ahead of your trip and make sure you have access to real-time marine weather alerts while you’re out on the water.

Outfitting your boat with the required Transport Canada safety gear is also crucial. Confirm you have lifejackets or PFDs for everyone on board — and wear them. In cold water, falling overboard without a lifejacket can lead to shock and hypothermia within minutes. Other critical safety items include a buoyant heaving line, signaling devices, a manual bilge pump or bailer, and a waterproof flashlight.

And remember, safe boating means boating sober. Alcohol and drug use severely affect your ability to make quick decisions and respond to emergencies, both of which are vital when operating a boat.

With careful preparation and a safety-first mindset, you can enjoy a season filled with smooth cruising, beautiful scenery, and unforgettable memories.

Stay smart, stay safe — and make the most of your time on Ontario’s waters!

If you’ve already had firsthand experience with a pontoon, you will easily understand the appeal of the Bennington 22 MSB. But if you haven’t, let’s start by reviewing a few of the reasons why pontoon boats have become top sellers in markets across North America.

Pontoon boats began in the early 1950s as basically four steel drums lashed to a frame. They were not unlike the log rafts of ancient cultures and not much more sophisticated at first.

The Best of Two Worlds

By Mathew Channer

Interior British Columbia might not be as famous for recreational boating as Canada’s Great Lakes, yet it is no less a world-class boating destination. The mountains offer their own flavour of marine adventure with their series of long, deep ribbon lakes, and there is perhaps no area that embodies this more uniquely than the iconic Okanagan basin in southern B.C. One could be forgiven for assuming this valley was purpose-built for nautical fun, with a few delightful perks thrown in to make the area entirely irresistible (wine-tasting, anyone?).
