The Sailing Plan is a Canadian small vessel safety app that is a fast and easy-to-use tool for creating, filing and sharing sailing plans before heading out on the water. The unique Automated Escalation System is activated immediately and forwards all sailing plan details to the appropriate contacts – set by the captain.

Captains keep their passengers safer by using the app, by managing their outings and keeping emergency contacts informed. The app escalates overdue plans from the server – not the app – so the right people are notified – at the right time – every time.

As long as the subscription is active – The Sailing Plan layers rich, detailed information on any voyage, becoming a retrievable log.

Transport Canada recommends boaters prepare a sailing plan – before leaving home port – and leave a copy with a responsible person on shore. These plans help guide search and rescue teams in the event of an overdue trip. This app can make it easier.

Cost

The app is free for the first year and $0.99 annually thereafter. It also comes with 10 free tokens and any future tokens cost cost $14.99 – the proceeds of which are donated 100% to local emergency responder organizations.

The app is developed by LRC , a consulting team based in Kelowna, BC.  Their site says LRC has been serving clients worldwide since 2001, providing innovative services and solutions across a wide range of industries. Their clients range from senior (including First Nations) and local government, corporate boards and organizations to universities, non-profit organizations and research institutions.

Most of us usually go boating on waters with which we are familiar, leaving the wharf of mooring where the boat is usually kept and heading off for the day, maybe even an overnighter. Sometimes we may plan a trip that takes us away from our home waters and venture into the unknown – the other side of the bay, up the coast or down the river to another lake. When we do, prudence means we have the right tools for navigation – at minimum: a compass and charts, perhaps a depth sounder, a GPS unit, maybe even a radar unit, probably not a sextant but hopefully a log book. It is with these tools and proper practices that prevent you from getting lost.

Ron and Pat Reder started out in October 1984 across the road from where they are right now on the Bayfield River in Bayfield ON. The store front was about 10 x 20 and the rest of that side of the building was a stock room, wood finishing room, then behind that was more back stock and the lunchroom. Expanding every few years for the store front, then moving over to this new building five years ago, this year with Adam, Shelley, and Holly are carrying on the business.
