Cleanup Time!

We all hate seeing litter on our favourite beaches and shorelines. You can pitch in and do something about the mess during the annual Great Canadian Shore Cleanup September 15-23. Volunteers are invited to join this year’s 18th annual cleanup, sponsored by Vancouver Aquarium and World Wildlife Fund Canada. You can join an existing cleanup, or lead a new cleanup as site coordinator on a shoreline near you.

The aquarium has led cleanups since 1994, when volunteers swept a shoreline in Vancouver’s Stanley Park. The program has operated nationally since 2002. Last year, 56,293 volunteers removed nearly 12,000 garbage bags of trash and debris, weighing nearly 144,000 kilograms, from 3,144 kilometres of shoreline across the country.

Station 29 is sponsored by the Ladysmith and District Marine Rescue Society and provides marine search and rescue services for the northern section of the Gulf Islands, including the islands and waters between Dodd Narrows to the north and Sansum Narrows to the south. Pumped About Safety

With a loud pffffft and lots of grins, participants at this year’s Ready, Set, Wear It event in Vancouver triggered their inflatable PFDs to launch National Safe Boating Awareness Week May 19-25 – and joined entrants around North America in trying to surpass last year’s record of 1,685 PFDs worn or inflated on one day. The Vancouver team included representatives from Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons, Canadian Coast Guard, Transport Canada, Vancouver Marine Police,

Yacht Clubs Oppose Kits Base Closure

Marine Organizations continue their opposition to the planned closures of Canadian Coast Guard establishments. The following was released from the Council of BC Yacht Clubs: The CBCYC has added its voice to the growing chorus of those raising strong objections to the closure of the Kitsilano Canadian Coast Guard base.  The council represents over 50 yacht clubs in British Columbia, with over 10,000 members – powerboaters, sailors, canoeists and kayakers, and represents the largest user segment of the recreational boating community in BC.

National Bank Easter Seals Waves Regatta set to go June 34, 24 at Royal Vancouver Yacht Club

This year’s charity sailing event will feature one weekend of competitive Keelboat and Dinghy racing in English Bay as well as the recreational Easter Seals Cup race. Almost 200 boats participated last year and this year event organizers are hoping for close to 300 boats to take part. The post race festivities offer a chance for all participants to kick back and relax after the first full day of racing.

Bayfield Marine Turns 40 with Big April Events

Ron and Pat Reder started out in October 1984 across the road from where they are right now on the Bayfield River in Bayfield ON. The store front was about 10 x 20 and the rest of that side of the building was a stock room, wood finishing room, then behind that was more back stock and the lunchroom. Expanding every few years for the store front, then moving over to this new building five years ago, this year with Adam, Shelley, and Holly are carrying on the business.
