Class Afloat Announces a $10,000 Scholarship for a Young Canadian Sailor

Lunenburg, Nova Scotia – West Island College International Class Afloat has established the Class Afloat ‘Young Canadian Sailor Scholarship’ to assist a student – endorsed by their CYA member club or sailing school – to participate in an extraordinary educational experience – attending high school while ocean sailing aboard a majestic square-rigged tall ship. This will be the first year that this scholarship has been awarded.

Class Afloat offers young people a unique journey of education and personal discovery. For eight months, students live, study and sail aboard The Sørlandet, a fully restored 210-foot, 1927 Class ‘A’ square-rigged tall ship. “The scholarship recognizes the personal development values shared by Class Afloat and CYA member sailing schools and yacht clubs across Canada by helping a young Canadian sailor experience one of the world's ultimate education and sailing experiences”.

The voyage will take students to over 20 ports. Students will participate in volunteer service projects in Senegal and the Dominican Republic. Through the course of the voyage, the young sailors become part of a close knit international community of like-minded peers, sharing experiences, developing leadership skills and making friendships that will last for lifetime.

The students are guided and supported on their journey by a team of professionals –experienced and passionate teachers, and a crew of fully qualified mariners.

Over 1500 students have taken part in Class Afloat’s “blue water high school” since it was founded over twenty-five years ago. The school is based in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada and is fully accredited by the province’s Ministry of Education to grant high school credits and matriculate high school graduates. Class Afloat university students are enrolled with Acadia University.

The Class Afloat Young Canadian Sailor Scholarship will be awarded to the young Canadian sailor who best demonstrates the values of excellence, integrity, community, teamwork, accountability, respect, commitment and achievement in his or her academic and sailing life. The application deadline is July 15, 2012.

Sixty-seven Tollycraft yachts 24 to 61’ in length and from home ports from Powell River to Redondo Beach, California gathered at Telegraph Harbour Marina September 13-16 for the 24th annual Canadian Tollycruiser Rendezvous. The federal government is closing BC's command centre for emergency oil spills at a time when the province is facing two possible pipeline projects and a potential spike in tanker traffic in West Coast waterways. Ottawa has said it will shut down BC's regional office for emergency oil-spill responders, located in Vancouver, and centralize operations in Quebec in the wake of the cost-cutting March 29 federal budget. The move could affect about 42 jobs in the BC-Yukon region.

Shelter Island Marina has acquired the 150-ton Travel Lift from nearby Bracewell Marine Group and has expanded their marine services. Shelter Island is a full-service marina with a dedicated wash bay with the latest filtration and water-cleaning systems and a number of associated service providers. New Acquisition Connects Quadra Marine Parks

With financial support from BC Marine Parks Forever Society and a successful local fundraising campaign, BC Parks is set to acquire land that connects two popular marine parks, a trail network and a lake at the north end of Quadra Island.

The province created Small Inlet Marine Park, on the west side of the island, and the Octopus Islands Extension Park at Waiatt Bay, to the east, in the late ‘90s, and always planned to complete the package by purchasing a 395-hectare property on the high ground between the two bays.

Ron and Pat Reder started out in October 1984 across the road from where they are right now on the Bayfield River in Bayfield ON. The store front was about 10 x 20 and the rest of that side of the building was a stock room, wood finishing room, then behind that was more back stock and the lunchroom. Expanding every few years for the store front, then moving over to this new building five years ago, this year with Adam, Shelley, and Holly are carrying on the business.
