CB Preview: Canadian Boating’s January Issue is Loaded

January 8, 2026

Welcome to 2026! It’s going to be a big year for all Canadian Boaters, and here at Canadian Boating we are extra excited to be celebrating our 50th anniversary! And what better way to enter this new chapter than to bring our readers one of the most innovate and exciting new developments in boating technology: the ENVGO NV1 electric hydrofoil cruiser. This Canadian-made cutting-edge vessel doesn’t cruise through the water; it flies over it. In our January 2026 issue, we’re bringing you an exclusive first look at what this futuristic boat can do.

But the future of boating doesn’t just mean new propulsion technology. Navigation is changing too, with new technology leveraging Artificial Intelligence to learn how you steer your boat and how it reacts to different conditions and proactively adjust course, saving you fuel, time and improving comfort. In this issue, tech writer Mike Gridley digs into Intelligent Navigation: how it works, when it’s coming, and what it can do.

Innovation isn’t just limited to powerboats either. Sailing vessel design is reaching new peaks in comfort and performance. Zuzana Prochazka explores the new design trends that are hitting the market in 2026, from wider hulls and intuitive living areas to improved battery technology and docking assist tools. Find out what makes sail boats smarter, faster and more liveable than ever before, whether it’s a monohull or a catamaran.

It’s cold out there! But it doesn’t have to be. The Exumas Islands in The Bahamas are waiting for you. Hundreds of sheltered bays, islands and cays, blue water sailing, and miles of idyllic untouched beaches, all accessible from your chartered yacht. Veteran captain and travel writer Mark Stevens shows us so many good reasons to get to the Exumas this winter, and why one trip just isn’t enough.

And for the Canadian sailor, we’ve got an inside look at one of the country’s most adventurous freshwater destinations: Lake Superior’s north shore. For the intrepid sailor prepared to commit, impressive coastal hikes, thundering waterfalls and deep connection with nature await. Round-the-world sailor Jennifer M. Smith takes her tried and tested vessel Green Ghost on a bold adventure to this remote but stunning wilderness.

Last but not least, it’s time to learn how to dock your boat in any conditions… from the comfort of your own home. In this month’s hilarious Crossing the Line, this ingenious bathtub docking practice technique from John Morris is fun(?) for the whole family and will turn you into an expert close quarter docking specialist in no time. Probably.

Bennington 22 MSB

By Andy Adams

If you’ve already had firsthand experience with a pontoon, you will easily understand the appeal of the Bennington 22 MSB. But if you haven’t, let’s start by reviewing a few of the reasons why pontoon boats have become top sellers in markets across North America.

Pontoon boats began in the early 1950s as basically four steel drums lashed to a frame. They were not unlike the log rafts of ancient cultures and not much more sophisticated at first.

The Best of Two Worlds

By Mathew Channer

Interior British Columbia might not be as famous for recreational boating as Canada’s Great Lakes, yet it is no less a world-class boating destination. The mountains offer their own flavour of marine adventure with their series of long, deep ribbon lakes, and there is perhaps no area that embodies this more uniquely than the iconic Okanagan basin in southern B.C. One could be forgiven for assuming this valley was purpose-built for nautical fun, with a few delightful perks thrown in to make the area entirely irresistible (wine-tasting, anyone?).
