Good News (Unreported) Bad News (Reported)

Good News goes unreported.

Let’s first look at making news the right way.  Northstar Canada’s Sail GP team took gold in the Sail GP race in LA a week ago. Then they took 2nd in San Francisco.

That would be the exciting way to make news, except that it did not.  Here at OnBoard, boats are our beat so we reported both of these winning events and, to be fair, so did quite a few international sailing sites. BUT – No newspapers or news outlets in Canada covered either of these powerful events. This would have been the right way for boating to make news; unfortunately, it didn’t happen. Canada’s SailGP Team expressed frustration.

Lots of news outlets, on the other hand, covered a boating story that made news in completely the wrong way. That news surrounds a trial involving a boat driven at high speed into the rocks off Toronto causing a devastating crash that killed two of the passengers. The reports mention liquor, possible drug use, high speeds. Ugh. Other similar horrible events, like Mr and Mrs Wonderful’s crash on Lake Joseph a couple of years ago get blanket coverage.

Please note: as the boating season gets ramped up, let’s try and stay out of the news in that bad way. It’s easy to get all preachy about safe and sane boat operation, knowing and following the rules. 99.9% of boaters are responsible and sensible.

How about we encourage the mainstream media to report on some positive boating news, of which there is lots?

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
