Canadian Team mascot, Justine Beaver, poses for happy Haligonian selfie

Events The goal here at CB OnBoard is to strengthen the community.  What’s going on with boaters in the many corners of this country?  Do the east coasters know what’s going on in the west? Or the middle? Or on the various inland lakes and waterways? Probably not but YOU are about to help.

If you are at a marina, yacht club or some hidden lake, please share.

Last week I was at tiny Aylesford Lake in Nova Scotia.  It’s not really a secret, but it is a bit remote and only the handful of cottagers know its whereabouts.. If you find it, you’ll be delighted. A gorgeous beach, a secluded launch ramp and a small but mighty club with a hard-racing fleet of National One Designs and a lot of picnic tables for outdoor socializing. Who knew?

Here’s how to reach us:  onboard@kerrwil.com  If you are organizing an event for Canada Day or a clinic, special costume party, potluck or parade, let us know. Take photos. Fill us in.

Flares As you’ll read below, flare disposal, already an irritating issue is about to become even more of a pain in the transom. Flares are nasty and outdated ones aren’t safe. But what to do?  Have you found a way to get rid of yours when they expire? Do you get mad every time you buy new ones? Will you switch to electronic?

SailGP The docks, bars, balconies, boats and waterfront parks on both sides of Halifax Harbour were packed with enthusiastic fans who watched the SailGP boats fly at speeds approaching 100 kmph from the bridge.  There was no way to know, but probably most of the crowd were boaters. Some of the crowds were regular Haligonians, out on the waterfront for a day of family fun. Either way, they got quite a show. Let’s hope Halifax becomes a permanent annual home for SailGP so we can start our planning for next time!

Sailing into the Future at Antigua Sailing Week

By Mathew Channer

“Standby tack,” Canadian sailor Katy Campbell orders. The crew scrambles over the sheet lines and braces on the deck.

“Three, two, one, tack!”

I wait until the bow turns into the wind and the headsail snaps over, then crawl over the cabin top of Panacea X to the now windward side. The trim team smoothly sheets on the headsail and a competitor vessel shoots past our stern, feet away, as our Solana 45 beats eastward along Antigua’s south coast.
