The Nanoose Power & Sail Squadron’s Safe Boating Day takes place on Saturday May 11 from 11am – 3pm at Fairwinds Marina, Nanoose Bay on Vancouver Island north of Nanaimo.

If you Power or Sail, Fish or Paddle, this is the time to make sure you have all the necessary safety gear on your craft for the start of the season.

Planned Activities and Participation

✦ Nanoose and Nanaimo Squadrons will be offering information on the many excellent courses offered by both on-line and in-person

✦ Independent Marine Supply will have boating equipment and safety gear for sale at show prices.

✦ Certified Inspector on hand to examine your fire extinguishers.

✦ Schooner Cove Yacht Club will be hosting a marine themed garage sale.

✦ C-Tow present to explain their emergency response services.

✦ Special Guest Speaker will share his firsthand experience in a near-sinking event on year on.

✦ Nanoose Bay Cafe will be open for food & drink

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
