The Radio Operators Certificate (Marine) – ROC(M) – course managed by CPS-ECP on behalf of the Federal Department of Innovation, Science, and Economic Development (ISED) Canada, has been updated by CPS-ECP’s Education Department and approved by ISED.

The updated course contains two new features. The study material will place more emphasis on teaching and testing radio communications skills, with the aim of improving radio usage. A revised testing format will allow students to complete the “Part 1” multiple choice exam online, followed with the “Part B” (oral exam) online, via a videoconferencing link, with a Recognized Examiner (RE).

The online course, also available to classroom students, is easier to navigate, and contains more quizzes (knowledge checks) and practice exercises. Interactive audio exercises simulate the marine radio environment and allow students to practice sending and receiving calls. These features focus on improving participants’ ability to effectively use a VHF radio, including DSC version.

The online course includes a link for students to easily download an e-copy or print a paper copy of the course manual.

The Education Department is currently preparing instructional material and planning to offer webinars which will provide direction and assistance to Squadron Education Officers and Registered Examiners on delivering the updated ROC(M) course.

The course upgrade project was funded by a contribution from the CPS Foundation.
