In the May 2023 issue of Canadian Yachting, we offer up a host of ideas for planning your boating season, from the practical to the party tunes!

 

Who Says You Can’t Take It With You…we have a series of “Listicles” and lots of photos of great ideas on Music for your boating playlist, Clothing to look stylish and stay comfortable, Food of course (!), Preparedness to stay safe and Watersports to help make your summer boating adventures even more enjoyable. So, plan to take it with you and have a great time!

But where does all that stuff go on your boat? Life-long cruiser and boating author Marianne Scott shares her best ideas for provisioning your boat in her story, Organizing Your Boat for Quick Getaways and More Efficient Storage. Extensive photos from her own boat clearly show the smart storage ideas and inventory checklists that make a cruise, a pleasure. You are bound to find some good ideas for your boat here!

OK, but where do you go? One great suggestion that is less well-known is Lake Huron and Sharon and Mark Stevens detail the many attractions of Lake Huron’s Lee Shore. A great selection of photos and colourful detail are sure to attract you to visit Port Franks, Bayfield and Grand Bend.

Of course, you want to keep your family and friends safe when boating. Through a grant to the Canadian Safe Boating Council, a series of innovative experiments are expanding our knowledge of what happens when a boating incident occurs. For the story Why do strong swimmers sometimes drown? PlaySafe Productions invited Canadian Yachting to observe their experiments for the Shock Factor.

Also in the May issue are two new boat reviews; the sensational Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47 sailing cat and the Cruisers Yachts 50 Cantius equipped with Volvo Penta’s new Assisted Docking system. Now handling a big yacht around the docks is easy and effortless.

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
