American Airlines to fly directly to BVI starting June 2023

BVI is the favorite cruising destination for many Canadian boaters but it’s always been a bit of a challenge to get there because of the limited facilities at the country’s main airport on Beef Island. The Terrance B. Lettsome airport underwent a major $55 million renovation in 2004 that included a 1,128 m runway extension, which still couldn’t accommodate larger planes like a 737.

The announcement of the new service was made in December by BVI Works Minister Kye Rymer who hailed it as a breakthrough for the country. He said the airline will utilize the Embraer E-175 aircraft which can operate with the Terrance B Lettsome’s current airport length.

While the flight does not initiate in Canada, traveling via Miami is relatively simple.

Lounging on the flybridge of our Sunsail 454, I had time to think about this dichotomy as I toasted the nighttime skies of Bora Bora and specifically the Southern Cross, a constellation that never fails to hypnotize. As the Crosby, Stills & Nash (1982) tune reminds us:

…you understand now why you came this way.
