In 2022, we were fortunate to meet with volunteers and members in traditional meetings, the spring training/membership meeting, and the fall conference. The restrictions imposed by the pandemic protected us and we are grateful for that, but it also made us realize the inestimable value of meeting in person once they were lifted.

Again this year, a number of changes have been initiated and I can predict that more changes are to come.

Some urgent matters had to be put aside because there were too many vacancies before the conference. Now that the National Executive Committee is largely renewed and the Board of Directors has welcomed new members whose dynamism was felt as soon as they were elected, we are in action mode to find a new director for the national office, to orchestrate a financial turnaround and to finally carry out the name change that has been waiting on the drawing board for so many years.

Starting this December 2022, we intend to review the roles of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee with a focus on efficiency.

With contributions from the squadrons and from the foundation to special projects, the training department continues to revise its curriculum and online course offerings with the added intention that the online courses will support classroom training.

Included in the list of special projects is the improvement of the computer system. Much work has already been done behind the scenes and changes will be noticeable in the coming year.

We take complaints of poor communication very seriously and intend to address them. Without flooding your e-mail boxes, we will be sending you more messages than in past years. Please take the time to read them as well as the information pages in The Porthole magazine and the On Board newsletter.

I end this message by repeating that the most important management level of this organization is the squadrons and that all other levels exist to support the squadrons. Let us know your needs and especially your good and creative ideas.

Spotted! Canadian Boating in Antigua & Barbuda

I wore my Canadian Boating cap everywhere I went in Antigua, for the sun, not for the shout-outs. But I sure received a lot of them.

Antigua Sailing Week is an international regatta that draws sailors of every level and spectators from all over the world. Yet I couldn’t walk across a room without being hailed by a Canadian who was as excited to see my cap as they were to see the racing. I met many who were on their 3rd, 4th and 5th visit.
