Last issue, we took a look at boat names. Little did we know we would get what probably will be the POTW shot of the year.

This note came in from Jaroslaw (“Jerry”) Iwanus, whose boat is in Pointe-Sapin, NB

“I know you’re not supposed to re-name a boat but, once the Russians invaded Ukraine, I had to show my support for Ukraine (including my relatives there) in any way I could.”

Boat names seem to be the hot POTW topic – we received a couple more, (scheduled for next issue). Your POTW photos can be anything boat-related. Yes boat names are always fun but kids, pets, signs, sunset and other boating activities are always welcome.

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
