Bristol Marine closes, marina and other businesses remain open

Bristol Marine Closes

Nov 11, 2021

Long standing full service marine repair and maintenance facility, Bristol Marine in Port Credit, ON, described on its website as Ontario’s, best-equipped, on-the-water marine service centre, has closed according to its recorded phone message this week thanking its many customers over the years. Why it has closed is only the subject of speculation but Port Credit Harbour Marina’s manager, Wayne Petriyk, while not able to discuss Bristol’s fate, was able to confirm that the marina is very much open. So is Pat Sturgeon Yachts, a brokerage that continues to occupy their office in what was a line of boating businesses on the west side of the large building of which Bristol was the major tenant. Fogh Boat Supplies, also a tenant in the building likewise remains open – “We don’t have any signs of slowing down.”

The future of Port Credit Harbour is not clear but published reports indicate that the area has been on the cusp of significant redevelopment for some time. In 2016 Toronto.com reported “A new marina at One Port Street East could cost the City up to $50 million” and that the Mississauga Council was debating “possibility of investing millions of dollars into a future marina, as part of Inspiration Port Credit, a strategic vision for the city’s waterfront”.

More recently in July 2019, CBC Toronto reported “Mississauga wants to transform its waterfront at Port Credit, but some residents have doubts.“ As CYOB reported in our October 14 issue this year  New $75-million Port Credit marina project is moving forward. Like many such projects the numbers discussed continue to graph upward.

How all these events connect and what the future looks like is not apparent but one unfortunate certainty is that customers of Bristol Marine will need to look elsewhere for boat service beginning immediately.

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

By Mark Stevens

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
