Sarah Douglas fundraiser at ABYC

Sarah Douglas

Nov 7, 2019

Sarah DouglasTokyo 2020 is coming up fast, especially for the athletes working hard to represent Canada (or any country, for that matter.) In sailing, we have at least two athletes who have a real shot at a medal: Sarah Douglas in the Laser Radial and Tom Ramshaw in the Finn.

Sarah Douglas has been on a rising trajectory towards her Olympic goal to win the GOLD medal. She has been training hard and learning along the way. (I get exhausted just watching the videos of her workouts on her facebook page).

Entering the medal race in second place in Lima at the Pan Am games last summer, Sarah knew what she had to do to win in 25 knots of wind, and did so, taking the only gold medal for Canada in sailing. Listening to Sarah talk is inspiring.

Ashbridge’s Bay Yacht Club (ABYC) in Toronto is proud that Sarah has chosen to be a member, and continues to coach and encourage young sailors when she has time. Unfortunately, government funding won’t cover her training and travel expenses, so Sarah has to spend far too much time trying to raise money for her campaign. Her focus is sharp, and her determination strong, but Sarah needs the support of the sailing community to achieve her dream.

ABYC is hosting a fundraising dinner for Sarah on Friday, November 15, starting at 6pm which will include both a silent and live auction as well as a 50-50 draw. The evening includes a meet and greet with Sarah plus the opportunity to take pictures with Sarah and her Pan Am Games Gold Medal (she’ll even let you put it on and pretend you won it!), dinner and live auction between courses followed by a final chance to meet with Sarah.

Cost for the dinner is $165.00 with a tax receipt being issued for $100.00; $115 will go straight to Sarah’s campaign.

The menu will be terrific.

Order tickets on-line at http://abyc.on.ca/events/sarahdouglas/.

If you are unable to attend the dinner, but would like to donate to Sarah’s campaign, please visit https://www.windathletes.ca/athletes/sarah-douglas. All donations are tax deductible.

If you or your company would like to donate an item for either of the two auctions, please contact wendy.loat@bell.net for details. And don’t forget to cheer on Sarah in her quest for gold. Be sure to watch her races at the Miami World Cup in February.

Hiding Out in Belize

Dodging holiday havoc in the tropics

Getting out of town was top-of-mind as it was only November and I was already saturated with Christmas traditions – the music, the glitter, the cookies, the sales. A week in relatively remote Belize was the siren song so we booked a 45-foot catamaran with The Moorings and packed our bags.
