CY Preview: Galley Guys – little ol’ winemakers

Galley Guys

Apr 11, 2019

You may have read in the April issue of Canadian Yachting, that the Galley Guys took a delightful and scenic cruise on the Rideau Canal aboard a Le Boat Horizon Escape 1350. The LeBoat people were marvelous and suggested all sorts of things to see and do. One of the best suggestions was to spend a night at the village of Westport.

The Guys had been tipped off to visit the Scheuermann Vineyard & Winery for a delicious dinner and to sample their wines. The Harbormaster explained that the Scheuermann Winery operates a shuttle and we just walked from the docks out to the street at the appointed time and there was the shuttle. Mere minutes later, and after the driver had given us a great introduction to the vineyards and winery, we arrived at the beautiful hill-side vineyard.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
