Cheticamp update

Hi Glen and John,

The dockage rates posted on the Cheticamp HA website gave the dockage rate for transient recreational vessels as $55.00 +HST per night, as posted in 2013. Very expensive, in my view for, say, a 30-ft vessel, considering there are no showers etc.

So, I contacted the HA to ask if those rates were still valid, or expected to change. They advised that they are in the process of updating their website and the revised rates are quite reasonable, and more inviting to cruisers.

They say:

The daily dockage rate for recreational vessels is as follows:
Vessels up to 65 ft.: First day – Docking before noon (charged for a full day)
First day – Docking after noon (free)
The free day only exists on the very first docking day
Rate per day – $0.50 per foot plus HST

Vessels over 65 ft: First day – Docking before noon (charged for a full day)
First day – Docking after noon (free)
The free day only exists on the very first docking day
Rate per day – $0.75 per foot plus HST

I’m in the process of updating the Cheticamp information on the Cruising Cape Breton website.
Cheers,
Colin

Hello, John!

Thanks so much for including the article on Broad Reach in CY.

In a certain sense, Broad Reach is all about the generosity of sailors:

we have about 50 volunteers, & only one employee. Without the strength & commitment of our volunteers from the sailing community we would never have come into existence – or have continued to exist, for 20 years.

Speaking of the generosity of sailors: we have just received a once-in-a-lifetime donation of a Rhodes Offshore 40, exquisitely restored to “better-than-new” condition.
We would like to submit an article on this beautiful vessel, & this deeply thoughtful donation, at some point in the future.

Until then, thank you so much for your support – which, again, reflects the generosity of sailors, whether on water, or … in print!

Cheers!

Hiding Out in Belize

Dodging holiday havoc in the tropics

Getting out of town was top-of-mind as it was only November and I was already saturated with Christmas traditions – the music, the glitter, the cookies, the sales. A week in relatively remote Belize was the siren song so we booked a 45-foot catamaran with The Moorings and packed our bags.
