Be a better boater put safety first

Safety At Sea

Dec 21, 2017

Safety at Sea Courses, in my opinion are a must for all offshore racers. I would also recommend the course to all Bluewater sailors and anyone planning to travel throughout the Pacific Northwest. The vast majority of boaters that I have come into contact with have never had the practical experience of testing their safety equipment and knowledge. The confidence and peace of mind that you get from this course will last you a lifetime on the water.

Offshore personal survival training (a.k.a. safety at Sea – Sea survival) is for experienced sailors who are participating in distance and offshore races and passages. BC Sailing, in conjunction with local yacht clubs, offers a two day offshore personal survival course which includes classroom and practical sessions. Topics covered include safety equipment, storm sails, weather forecasts, heavy weather, man overboard, emergency signals and communications.

Safety At Sea 3 The hands-on practical sessions include using marine flares and damage control equipment, using lifejackets, life rafts and other safety equipment in a pool environment. The course is Sail Canada – World Sailing approved. Participants who successfully complete the course receive an Offshore Personal Survival Course certificate, valid for five years. For more information and online registration, please see http://www.bcsailing.bc.ca/safetyatsea.php

The class is popular and tends to fill up quickly.

By Andy Adams

There is no shortage of fun and exciting new boat designs hitting the market, but for the last few years these have been mainly outboard-powered day boats. So when I heard that Pride Marine in Orillia, Ontario, had a Nimbus 365 Coupe in the water, I jumped at the chance to get out on it.

Tahiti—Updates from Paradise

By Zuzana Prochaska

I’ve been to Tahiti seven times—six on charter and once as crew for a couple of yachties. Over the 25 years that I’ve been visiting, it’s changed dramatically. Yet, inexplicably, it has also stayed the same.

Lounging on the flybridge of our Sunsail 454, I had time to think about this dichotomy as I toasted the nighttime skies of Bora Bora and specifically the Southern Cross, a constellation that never fails to hypnotize. As the Crosby, Stills & Nash (1982) tune reminds us:

…you understand now why you came this way.
