There has no doubt been a huge amount of improvement in recreational boat design in the last 100 years. Thanks to modern materials boats are faster and easier to handle. That said, boats do seem to be getting better looking. As evidence, I submit the resurgence of “Classic” yachting events and the vast sums being spent by some on J Class boats and other types from the early 20th century.

This applies to power boats as well. Peter Patterson and his crew at Bras d’Or Boatworks in Baddeck sent us these photos of a fine-looking boat they recently worked on. Chocolat is a 1997, Able 36 (designed by C.W. Paine) owned by a Sydney couple. The yard installed a teak cabin sole, some interior carpentry, topsides paint, exterior brightwork, a custom swim platform and epoxy barrier coat.
