BMW Lasqueti Island Regatta is a blast!

The Schooner Cove yacht club’s 30th anniversary BMW Lasqueti Island Regatta was a huge success. Located in Nanoose Bay, British Columbia, this small yacht club with minimal facilities, put on a spectacular event.

In addition to a challenging race with an incredible scenery as a backdrop the allure of free food and cheap beer is a recipe that few sailors in the racing community can resist.

The 37 race boats from 11 BC yacht clubs came together to tackle one of the most challenging courses in the Vancouver Island Racing Series. With four division starting outside Fairwinds Marina this past June 3rd, 200. plus skippers and crew took on the challenge of light air conditions and currents that would not follow the tide tables.

Lasqueta Regatta 2This year’s regatta chair, Peter Milne commented, “Over 50 volunteers organized the race, served hundreds of meals, and participated in planning and promotion that goes into this regatta every year.”

Charline Sinclair and her staff worked tirelessly to provide the with the 200+ sailors.

The tremendous thanks to going to 44 sponsors and prize the donors, particularly the Presenting Sponsor, BMW Nanaimo, and Windsor Plywood which sponsors the Windsor Plywood Cup, Thrifty Foods and Andrew Sheridan which all contribute greatly to the success of the event.

Lasqueti RegattaRoger Kibbles from the Saltspring Island Sailing Club, skipper of Electra, commented that “The whole three days were well organized, most effectively catered and visitors were treated as special VIPs…We shall certainly return next year.”

The Erie Canal – An Extraordinary Waterway

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
