Brentwood Bay and Friday Harbor Power Squadrons celebrate “The Pig War of 1859”

Pig War - Friday Harbor

August 19, 2016

This year’s event was held at the Port Browning Marina on Pender Island.  Commander Ann Einboden, left, along with members David & Lesa Tegrothenhuis of the Friday Harbor Power Squadron, rally their team for the 30th annual games against the Brentwood Bay Power Squadron. This year’s Pig War event was held at the Port Browning Marina.

Len Fallan of the Brentwood Power Squadron was on hand to recount the story of how the two clubs came together to have fun and celebrate the Pig War of 1859.

With all the hard work that Squadron members put in each year to provide safety training for boaters, it was now time to celebrate and party.

As the story goes,  Len, while sitting at the Bluewater Bar and Café in Friday Harbour, decided that the Pig War would be the perfect backdrop for this event.

On a bright sunny Saturday afternoon with flags flying and music blaring The Americans from Friday Harbor and  the Brentwood Bay Squadron representing the British took to the field and made ready for battle.

The Games included Frisbee Golf, Bocce Ball, Ring Toss and of course the Pig Toss. The trophy went to the Brentwood  Bay Squadron this year. Although the feast that followed in the early days of the event included the all day roasting up a pig on a spit. This year’s feast included pulled pork and chicken wings. The significance of these two entrées was just prove that pigs can fly.
