My friend Gillian’s first experience Yacht racing was at the Cowichan Bay Regatta. Gillian and her husband Rod own a Catalina 32 that they enjoy cruising on.

Gillian has been listening to me talk of yacht racing for the past couple of years and when a neighbour asked if she would join his crew for the Cowichan Bay Regatta, she jumped at the chance.

Here is what she had to say about the experience,

“It was quite an introduction to racing!! It was hard work, exhilarating, terrifying at times and overall a fun and great experience. My least favourite part was jockeying for position at the start line when imminent collisions were craftily avoided at the last second time and time again. We had some very close calls! I got used to it……sort of….. after a few
races. We had 4 races on Sat (one too many as we were getting tired by then) and 2 longer ones on Sunday. The boat was called Cantina, sail number 220, so you can find us in some of the photos below. The boat was a 1990, 42 foot Catalina so same model as ours but a lot more boat. We ended up 3rd out of 12 in our division which our skipper, Garry, said was the best he’s done in that regatta. Our boat will be a piece of cake to sail after all that! “

I think Gillian is hooked!

Hiding Out in Belize

Dodging holiday havoc in the tropics

Getting out of town was top-of-mind as it was only November and I was already saturated with Christmas traditions – the music, the glitter, the cookies, the sales. A week in relatively remote Belize was the siren song so we booked a 45-foot catamaran with The Moorings and packed our bags.
