A Brand New Destination on the Waterfront in Parry Sound

New Loft

July 26, 2016

Walkers along the Waterfront Trail from Big Sound Marina in Parry Sound have often said they wished there were a nice place at Sail Parry Sound to meet friends to sit and enjoy its spectacular view with a coffee or a snack. This summer, they have their wish.

The Country Gourmet Café on the Upper Deck at Sail Parry Sound opened its doors on the May long weekend, its fresh healthy foods and beverages available to the public all summer, with its unique, glorious panoramic view of the Big Sound.

The sailing club has invited three other community-minded organizations to share its spectacular location, the scene of a summer sailing school and invitational regattas over the years, to offer an added range of activities for all ages over the whole summer.

White Squall, the Georgian Bay Paddling Centre will demonstrate kayaking and paddle boarding and offer professional kayak and paddle board training most Tuesday and Saturday afternoons in July and August at Sail Parry Sound. They can be reached for details at 705-342-5324

Cycling along the trail, a level, winding path with the area’s distinctive pink rock, is a gorgeous adventure, through leafy green areas, alongside smooth beaches and rocky shores, past pretty residential streets and blue water, boatyards and historic buildings. Parry Sound Bikes will offer their Tour the Town Bike Experience to introduce the pleasures of the shoreline. Reserve at 705-746- 6060.

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.
