Steveston Lifeboat Needs Your Help: June 15th

Steveston Lifeboat

June 5, 2016

Wednesday June 15th, 5 to 8pm.

The Steveston Lifeboat is a private vessel, owned by renowned marine artist and mariner, John Horton, who has volunteered the boat for Search & Rescue use in Steveston since 1988. The vessel has a rich heritage that started with the US Navy in Pearl Harbour in 1944.

In 2014 the Steveston Lifeboat was in a training accident and is in need of further repair before it can be re-enlisted as a Search & Rescue vessel. Having been involved in 871 rescues – the Steveson Lifeboat now needs some rescuing of its own. Boating BC has supported its repair efforts and encourages the marine industry to do the same. There is a fundraiser planned on June 15th at the Vancouver Maritime Museum. If there is anything your organization can to help, it would be appreciated and beneficial to everyone.

As I shift our chartered canal boat into neutral, I’m soothed by the soundtrack of bird calls, the occasional plaintive horn of a distant train and the hum of our engine.

I reach for the VHF to radio the lockmaster in charge of Erie Canal’s Lock 32 dead ahead. Our boat spins gently in the current like a maple key in a mud puddle.

“This is Onondaga,” I say. “Headed westbound and requesting passage.”
