Maritime Museum of BC is Sporting a New Society Office and Exhibit Space

Maritime Museum BC News

The Maritime Museum of BC is excited to announce the leasing of a space at 634 Humboldt St. in Nootka Court as a Society Office and small exhibition space. The Museum took possession of the 3600-square foot space on July 1, and will be making the space ready for the public in the coming weeks. The projected opening date for 634 Humboldt is early August 2015.

The new MMBC Society Office, located directly across from the Empress Hotel and steps away from Victoria’s Inner Harbour, will be developed in a phased approach and will feature administrative offices, a research lab, and a gift shop in its first phase.  In addition to being a hub of activity for our volunteers, we also invite the public to visit this space and engage in conversations about the museum’s new vision and goals for the future.

The Humboldt St. location is a chance to establish stability for our organization and to provide opportunities for growth and experimentation for the Museum, while staying true to our decades-long heritage and commitment to serving British Columbians. As additional resources become available, attention will be placed on the development of engaging, fluid exhibits designed to share, inspire and connect our rich, diverse collection with our members, visitors and community at-large.

The MMBC is extremely grateful to our supporters in our Nootka Court project. We would like to thank the Lindholm Family of Victoria for their generous donation of $10,000 to support improvements and infrastructure at the Nootka Court location. We are also appreciative of Gerald Hartwig and Hartwig Industries for facilitating this opportunity, and of Wottrich Holdings Ltd. for providing the space at a substantially reduced rate. We are also grateful to the Province of British Columbia for providing an off-site storage facility for our collection. Above all, we would like to thank our volunteers and community partners for their unwavering support in this time of transition.

Admission to the new location will be by donation. Details of an opening date and launch event will follow in the coming weeks.

Hiding Out in Belize

Dodging holiday havoc in the tropics

Getting out of town was top-of-mind as it was only November and I was already saturated with Christmas traditions – the music, the glitter, the cookies, the sales. A week in relatively remote Belize was the siren song so we booked a 45-foot catamaran with The Moorings and packed our bags.
