Vancouver Maritime Museum has announced its 2013 Ocean Cruising Speakers Series:

January 18    18 Years of Sailing Together by Judith and Harry McPhie
January 25    South to Warmer Climes, Vancouver to Mexico and Back by Steve and Tracey Dolling
February 1    Vancouver Island Circumnavigation by Ron Ungless and Gordon Milne
February 8    Around the World at Age 18 by Zac Sunderland
February 15    The Long Beat Home – Brisbane to Victoria by Jennifer Handley and Campbell Good

All events are at 8 pm at the auditorium of the HR MacMillan Space Centre (next door to the VMM on Kitsilano Point). Cost is $13 for each evening or $50 for the series. VMM members pay $40 for the series. For information and tickets, call 604-257-8300 or visit www.vanmaritime.com.

Tahiti—Updates from Paradise

I’ve been to Tahiti seven times—six on charter and once as crew for a couple of yachties. Over the 25 years that I’ve been visiting, it’s changed dramatically. Yet, inexplicably, it has also stayed the same.

Lounging on the flybridge of our Sunsail 454, I had time to think about this dichotomy as I toasted the nighttime skies of Bora Bora and specifically the Southern Cross, a constellation that never fails to hypnotize. As the Crosby, Stills & Nash (1982) tune reminds us:
