Transformational Refitting: A New Way to Look at Yacht Purchase

Platinum 120

Platinum Marine announces the unveiling of their new refit project, “encore”, 120’ Crescent, at the 2013 Seattle Boat Show. The luxury yacht was refurbished to new construction levels through Platinum’s Transformational Refit program.

The transformation included the addition of an upper level, modernized exterior styling, hull lengthening, and the addition of a bulbous bow. The interior of the new tri-level vessel was removed and replaced with a professionally designed interior with up-to-date amenities such as a state-of-the-art entertainment system, technically advanced lighting systems, and chef’s galley. Mechanical, electronic, and yacht management systems have been either significantly upgraded or replaced throughout the vessel. Essentially the encore is a new yacht in appearance and operation, without the cost of a newly constructed vessel. The encore is listed for sale by Platinum Marine for $6,995,000.

Platinum Marine, with years of megayacht construction experience, created the Transformational Refit program to change timeworn vessels into yachts that look and operate like new builds. Through their global connections, Platinum buys tired or neglected pedigree yachts that are in distressed situations at fractions of their new build costs. Working with quality design offices such as Ron Holland Design, Paul Fredrickson Design, and its own in-house design team – Platinum carefully plans a Transformational Refit that adds new exterior modifications or styling, new interiors or layouts, and new system and mechanical updating as required. The end result is a stunning, fully functional, updated yacht with greater potential for serious return on investment.

“Our Transformational Refits offer a new opportunity to purchase a highly desirable yacht at a substantial saving,” says Tim Charles, Platinum Marine’s General Manager, “transformed yachts are designed for buyers who want a new, bigger boat but are not prepared to pay new build prices in this economy. They understand true value and are willing to make small concessions to save millions of dollars. Everything about this yacht feels new”.

Platinum Marine (2010) Ltd. is a privately owned company located in Richmond, BC, a suburb of Vancouver. With over 80 employees, Platinum is a full service shipyard serving the yacht industry. For more information please visit www.PlatinumMarine.ca

So when I heard that Pride Marine in Orillia, Ontario, had a Nimbus 365 Coupe in the water, I jumped at the chance to get out on it.

Tahiti—Updates from Paradise

By Zuzana Prochaska

I’ve been to Tahiti seven times—six on charter and once as crew for a couple of yachties. Over the 25 years that I’ve been visiting, it’s changed dramatically. Yet, inexplicably, it has also stayed the same.

Lounging on the flybridge of our Sunsail 454, I had time to think about this dichotomy as I toasted the nighttime skies of Bora Bora and specifically the Southern Cross, a constellation that never fails to hypnotize. As the Crosby, Stills & Nash (1982) tune reminds us:

…you understand now why you came this way.
