Swiftsure Race Sails May 24-26

Swiftsure
The 2014 Swiftsure International Yacht Race sails out of Victoria May 24-26. The weekend incorporates overnight and one-day races on four separate courses in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, including the 138-mile Swiftsure Lightship Classic to Swiftsure Bank, as well as pre- and post-race festivities in Victoria.

Swiftsure ranks among the most challenging sailing events in the Northwest, thanks to a combination of unpredictable winds and weather plus strong currents that tests crews’ skills and patience. Organizers at the host Royal Victoria YC say changes to safety equipment requirements for the race open up the long course to smaller boats with modest budgets.

Lounging on the flybridge of our Sunsail 454, I had time to think about this dichotomy as I toasted the nighttime skies of Bora Bora and specifically the Southern Cross, a constellation that never fails to hypnotize. As the Crosby, Stills & Nash (1982) tune reminds us:

…you understand now why you came this way.
