Musqueam Indian Band Celebrates Opening Of Vancouver’s Newest Marina

Chester

The Musqueam Indian Band celebrates the opening of Milltown Marina, a full service recreational marina located on Richmond Island, adjacent to Vancouver and the Vancouver International Airport.

A celebration was held Sunday, June 8 at 1:00 pm at Milltown Marina, 9191 Bentley Street, Richmond. Milltown Marina was developed through a limited partnership with the Musqueam Capital Corporation and Bastion Development, with a 50 year land lease with Port Metro Vancouver. The marina is located in Musqueam traditional territory. The marina is a full service facility with 220

water slips for boats up to 80 feet, and a drystack moorage facility for 200 boats up to 28’. Amenities include a repair facility, marine store, convenience store, full service restaurant, yacht sales, and storage facilities.

The opening celebration began with Chief Wayne Sparrow of the Musqueam Indian Band travelling by longboat to the dock at Milltown Marina. There was met by Musqueam band members and their families, invited VIP guests,

and the marina tenants. After a welcome from Chief Sparrow, and Kim Maust, Vice President, Bastion Development Corporation, members of the Musqueam Indian Band will perform a traditional dance. The official opening will be marked with a ceremonial cutting of a traditional cedar rope and blessing by a Musqueam elder.

“It is an exciting time for Musqueam to be expanding our marine business opportunities within our Traditional Territories, we are a people of the  Fraser and the marina reflects this”, says Chief Wayne Sparrow. “Bastion is very proud to be working with the Musqueam Capital Corporation on this project”, says Kim Maust from Bastion Devel-opment Corporation, “It has been a fulfilling process seeing Milltown come together and I hope it will be a place the Marpole com-munity will enjoy for many years to come.”
