Canadian Yachting West’s April 2012 edition, available this month, focuses on the coast’s favourite cruising ground, the Gulf islands, in a pair of feature articles.

In Part 1 of a two-part series on BC Tidal Passes, cruising author William Kelly takes an in-depth look at tidal gateways of the Gulf Islands, including Active, Porlier and Gabriola Passes, with details on how to approach and transit them safely. In a Destination feature, editor Duart Snow explores Ganges, the islands’ most engaging and boater-friendly cruising stop.

Robert Buller reviews the latest technologies in marina batteries, while Elizabeth Kerr compiles a buyer’s guide to binoculars. And we review the new Jeanneau NC 11, a stylish sedan cruiser well-suited to West Coast waters, and the Bavaria Cruiser 36, a great value in a cruising sailboat.

As the May target date looms for the federal government’s planned closure of Kitsilano Coast Guard Station, opponents among first-responder organizations and at all levels of government are stepping up their campaign to reverse the controversial decision.


Among recent developments:
At the Vancouver Boat Show, hard-working volunteers from the Jericho Sailing Centre Association, a leader in the campaign to save the station, collected more than 3,000 signed letters to Prime Minster Stephen Harper. The letter sets out key arguments against the closure, accuses local Conservative MPs of “abandoning ship” on the issue, and concludes: “I will not vote for a party that closes the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station.” The letters were sent to the PM at no cost using MPs’ free letter-mail privileges.

Seattle’s Lake Union Boats Afloat Show

Seattle’s 34th annual Lake Union Boats Afloat Show begins Wednesday, September 12 and continues through Sunday, September 16, 2012. The show is open from 11 am to 7 pm weekdays and 10 am to 6 pm weekends.

More than 50 brands of yachts and 50 brokers and dealers from Washington, Oregon, California, Florida, and British Columbia will display their yachts. Yachts represented will include Ocean Alexander, Selene, Westport, Kadey-Krogen, American Tug, Regal, Jeanneau, Navigator, Hunter, Catalina, Riviera, Sea Ray and many more.

Conch Charters Celebrates 25 years in the British Virgin Islands


The British Virgin Islands is home to Conch Charters, operated for the past 25 years by Cindy Chestnut and Brian Gandey, a young couple from Montreal.

Everybody that I have met that has taken a winter trip to the Caribbean spends at least one moment fantasizing about “cashing it all in” and starting a
business in a tropical paradise. I know because I have done it many times. The British Virgins Islands is one of these special places; beautiful blue water,
swaying palm trees, gentle people and perfect sailing weather almost all year long. In today’s world this is all but impossible with all regulations, quotas,
bureaucracy maturation of the of the local business society in the islands. But 25 years ago the dream was alive and for the taking for Cindy and Brian.

2014 NP Yacht Owners Rendezvous

The 2014 NP Yacht Owners Rendezvous at Telegraph Harbour Marina last week was a huge success, attended by 24 boats and 55 people.  Everyone enjoyed the great food, music and Mexican theme.  A good time was had by all and the weather cooperated despite a few downpours on the last day.  Educational and round-table sessions for both women and men were well attended.  Many thanks to Malcolm Ellison of Lightship Mobile Marine for his entertaining and informative sessions, stories and laughs.

State of the Recreational Boating Industry Presentation January 15th

The 2013 State of the Recreational Boating Industry Presentation and Industry Breakfast took place Tuesday, January 15th at the Toronto International Boat Show. The event was sponsored by GE Capital, NMMA Canada and Boating Industry Canada magazine.

The event attracted a capacity crowd of about 200.

The presentations were opened by Andy Adams of Boating Industry Canada talking about two major demographic shifts that will greatly impact future planning for marine industry professionals.

Bayfield Marine Turns 40 with Big April Events

Ron and Pat Reder started out in October 1984 across the road from where they are right now on the Bayfield River in Bayfield ON. The store front was about 10 x 20 and the rest of that side of the building was a stock room, wood finishing room, then behind that was more back stock and the lunchroom. Expanding every few years for the store front, then moving over to this new building five years ago, this year with Adam, Shelley, and Holly are carrying on the business.
