Nine teams compete for coveted York/Stolz Cup Match Race held at RCYC
Nine teams complete for coveted York/Stolz Cup Match Race held at RCYC August 6-7 on the waters of Toronto Harbour. Held in Sonars, these nine teams from Canada and the US completed a full round robin of 36 races on Saturday August 6th. Event organizer David Jarvis, provided excellent racing, equipment, and hospitality with Chris Cook rounding out the team as the Principal Race Officer. Moving into Sunday Peter Wickwire lead the group with a flawless 8 wins, followed by Steve Lowry, and then a three way tie for third with Terry McLaughlin, Magnus Sandberg,

Two Canadians Enter Buddy Melges Challenge
With the 2012 London Olympic games right around the corner, the Third Annual Buddy Melges Challenge has taken on even greater importance. Hosted by Sail Sheboygan, one of four US Sailing Centers, the Challenge is expected to draw teams from around the world to the shores of Lake Michigan, August 22nd through the 27th. The Buddy Melges Challenge is one of just four ISAF Grade 1 women’s match racing events in the country. Contested using the new Olympic-designated Elliott 6m boats, most of the international field of competitors will use this regatta as a springboard to potential Olympic success.

Miss Supertest in Spotlight Again with Commemorative Stamps
The national unveiling of two stamps Monday, commemorating the three-peat Harmsworth Trophy win by Miss Supertest III, capped off a very successful celebratory weekend in Picton. The Canadian hydroplane Miss Supertest III captured her third Harmsworth Trophy just kilometres away from the 50th anniversary show site of Loch Sloy Holdings (the former Camp Picton) which donated a hangar for the event. Dignitaries in attendance included MP Prince Edward Hastings Daryl Kramp, MPP Prince Edward-Hastings Leona Dombrowsky, Prince Edward County Mayor Peter Mertens and members of county council.

Ontario Sailors Do Well At Laser North American Championship
Brant Beach, NJ was home to the 2011 Laser and Laser Radial North American Championships, July 12th -15th, and also home for several Canadian athletes during this event. Ontario was well represented, having 15 athletes competing in the Laser class and 11 athletes competing in the Laser Radial class. The venue consisted of extremely shallow waters with several weedy patches patches for the athletes to avoid across the race course. Day 1 consisted of three races for both the fleets and included moderate breeze from the West, South West with fairly large shifts and immobile patches of pressure spread across the course.

Chicago-Mackinac Race—100 Knots and Off the Clock
The Chicago Yacht Club's 103rd Race to Mackinac, presented by Veuve Clicquot—Hearing that it’s windy and rainy is one thing. Hearing that water is vaporizing all around you is a completely different tale of horror. Tim Prophit, owner and co-skipper of Fast Tango, an North American 40 out of the Bayview Yacht Club, and his crew have seen the other side. In fact, their descriptions of the 'strobing' lightning and 'white water everywhere' are on an entirely different level than anything that racing sailors in North America have seen in many, many decades.

Coast Guard releases names of crewmembers involved in vessel capsizing
Having completed notifications of the next of kin, as well as debriefing immediate family members regarding the details of the search, the Coast Guard is officially releasing the names of those boaters who died and those who were rescued this morning in Lake Michigan. Deceased are: Suzanne Bickel, age 41; and Mark Morley, 51, both of Saginaw, Mich. Rescued were: Christopher Cummings, age 16; John Dent, 50; Stan Dent, 51; Peter Morley, 47; Stewart Morley, 15; and Lee Purcell, 46.

Announcing Yacht Brokerage Universities
YachtWorld.com, the world’s largest Internet yacht brokerage portal and a division of Dominion Enterprises, is partnering with the Yacht Broker Association of America to co-present two more Yacht Brokerage Universities (YBU): Mississauga, Ontario on August 4 and Seabrook, TX on August 11. Canadian Yachting and Boating Ontario are also providing industry support for the Yacht Brokerage University in Ontario.

Excitement is building for the 2011 Lake Ontario Challenge
Preparations for the 2011 Lake Ontario 300 are well underway as boats continue to register for this challenging and exciting race. Last year the fleet was hit with severe storms early on forcing many to retire. Most of these boats are returning this year to complete the course and 'deal with unfinished business'. The race begins on Saturday July 16th and the participants will race in a range of categories including, single handed, double handed and fully crewed divisions. Boats competing vary from fast, sleek 40 foot sleds to more traditional racer-cruisers and multi-hulls.

3rd Annual Boating For The Cure Raises Over $100 000
Boating for the Cure is a daylong family style poker run around the Muskoka Lakes raising funds equally for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and Prostate Cancer Canada. In November of 2010 we set a goal of raising $100 000 in the 2011 event. With a lot of hard work from many sponsors, participants and donors we were able to reach our goal and raise just over $102 000. We started the fundraising off with a boat auction in January raising over $38 000 and kept the ball rolling with help from our sponsors. Through on air advertisements, an auction and PSAs the Evanov Radio Group raised over $21 000.

Velux Canada Hosts Derek Hatfield’s Welcome Home
Nels Moxness, President, Velux Canada and avid supporter and dear friend officially welcomed Derek back to Canada yesterday after he successfully finished the 2010/2011 Velux 5 Oceans Race. Unlike Derek's competitors, Derek's Spirit of Canada Campaign has raised the funds to support this campaign one kilometer, one supporting name on deck and one dollar at a time. Although amazing donations consistently flowed in from friends of the Spirit of Canada Campaign, the significant contribution from Active House made Derek's latest entry possible. (Active House is a vision of buildings that create healthier and more comfortable lives for their occupants without negative impact on the climate – moving us towards a cleaner, healthier and safer world.)

Archives and Collections Society Announces History of Yachting Exhibition
The Archives and Collections Society announces its summer exhibition The History of Yachting from June 11 – August 4, 2011. This year's exhibition will be showcasing the art of famous yacht designers and illustrating how their designs evolved. Paintings by members of the Canadian Society of Marine Artists, together with numerous prints and photographs will be displayed, highlighting some of the famous and important sailing yachts that were innovative over the last one hundred years.

Barbados Announces Title Sponsorship of NA Beneteau Championship
Barbados is the official title sponsor of the 2011 Beneteau First 36.7 North American Championship in Toronto, Ontario. This year’s race, from September 8 to 11, marks the 10th anniversary of this North American Class Regatta event and is the first time it will be held in Canadian waters. The weekend will host multiple sailing races over four days and on-shore events including an evening celebration at the National Yacht Club on Friday, September 9, 2011 featuring Barbadian entertainment and a themed menu from the Caribbean’s first and only Zagat rated island. 2011 Sail for Gold – First Day a long one for Canadians
The first day of racing at the 2011 Sail for Gold Regatta is finally over after many postponements across all fleets as a persistent NW based breeze stuck around longer than anticipated, before skies cleared giving way to SW conditions that were idyllic albeit very late in the day. Luckily every course was successful in getting at least one race in for the day. Canadians are getting off to a good start with Star team Richard Clarke & Tyler Bjorn placing third in their one race of the day as well as Laser sailor David Wright placing third in the yellow fleet.

Velux 5 Oceans 2010-11 Concludes
Velux 5 Oceans 2010-11 is the longest single handed event in the world. After nine months the racing has finished. It was an epic battle full of thrills and spills, highs and lows, drama and action – but like all good things it must come to an end. The arrivals of solo sailors Derek Hatfield and Zbigniew ‘Gutek’ Gutkowski into the French port of La Rochelle on Sunday marked the end of racing in the 2010-11 edition of the Velux 5 Oceans, following the arrivals of winner Brad Van Liew and Chris Stanmore-Major in the days previously.

Susan Hood Trophy Race Results
Soaked crews made it back to PCYC after experiencing the full gamut of conditions in the 2011 Susan Hood Trophy Race. Many abandoned the race after hours of drifting near the Burlington Weather Mark; PCYC's Simon Hampson on Kawabonga explained when I saw him on the docks at 5:30 AM: 'Despite the light winds at the start, we still managed to get to within two miles of the Burlington mark in three hours, then we spent the next three hours drifting towards the mark in the slow current with no wind in the sails. We were still a half-mile away when we decided to turn on the engine and come back home. A bit frustrating but at least we were out on the water!'

TELUS Van Isle 360 Yacht Race Gives Back
Today, Organizers of the TELUS Van Isle 360 Yacht Race announced that they will provide a $25,000 donation for the Queen Alexandra Foundation in support of Jeneece Place, a home away from home for children requiring medical treatment and their families. Jeneece Place is the dream of 17 year old Jeneece Edroff, known to many as the Vancouver Island Penny Girl, who, with help from TELUS, raised more than $1.5 million to help children with special needs.

MAC Opening at RNSYS – Friday, 27 May 2011
The news media is invited to the official opening of the Marine Activity Centre (MAC) at the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron (RNSYS) on Friday, May 27th, at 2:00 p.m. The MAC is a Canada Sport centre of training excellence for the sport of sailing. It is being used by members of Canada’s national sailing team for training in preparation for upcoming World Championships and next year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games in London.

Velux 5 Oceans – Sprint 5 sets sail from Charleston
The Velux 5 Oceans Sprint 5 will begin today from Charleston SC (USA). The four skippers that remain will set off towards La Rochelle, France to complete a global circumnavigation back to where they began their journeys on October 17, 2010. The skippers are Brad Van Liew (USA), Zbigniew ‘Gutek’ Gutkowski (POL), Derek Hatfield (CAN) and Chris Stanmore-Major (GB). Brad will secure overall victory in the race as long as he successfully completes the final leg. Derek and Hatfield are tied on points and the battle between them to decide second and third on the podium will be fierce.

Announcing the 2011 Canadian Sailing Team
The Canadian Yachting Association is proud to announce the members of the 2011 Canadian Sailing Team. The team was established based on 2010 performance criteria found HERE. CYA also established a new national team structure that better defines a winning culture and more clearly delineates the way support is tailored to our sailors at various levels of development and international performance. The CST Podium team is established by elite level performance criteria and aligns with the Own the Podium program. The CST Senior Development team is determined by the CYA high performance staff based on ongoing international performances.

Match-racing, at its best, is Mano a Mano – hand-to-hand combat. Match-racing here, in the Budget Marine Match-Racing Cup, run-up to the Heineken Regatta, takes that sort of intensity up a few notches. Some of the top racers in the world. No Wednesday night yacht club race, this. Races are on six Jeanneau Sunfast 20’s. Eight skippers. Each skipper races every other skipper. Each skipper races each of the six boats.

Halfway to Serious
The motto for the Heineken Regatta in Sint Maarten, now in its 31st year, is perfect in both conception and execution. And if the festivities so far are any indication, this year’s race series will be another exercise in 'Serious Fun.' They’re already halfway there. Ground zero is the Sint Maarten Yacht Club, a two-storey building right beside the lift bridge leading to Simpson Bay Lagoon. From the yacht club you can’t help but stare out at the fleet of megayachts moored and berthed in the lagoon.

Go, Kingston, Go!
If the sailing gods look fondly, the Kingston team's efforts to land the ISAF Worlds in 2014 will be a tremendous win for Canada and for the Americas. The awarding of this event will allow the foundation for building the sport that is needed so badly here. Jamie Fraser, Marianne Davis and Tim Irwin all are owed a huge vote of praise and thanks for creating such an impressive bid. Misters Consistency – Richard Clarke & Tyler Bjorn at Rolex Miami OCR with Magic Marine
January 25, 2011 (Miami, FL) – Richard Clarke and Tyler Bjorn (CAN) are considering renaming their Clarke/Bjorn Sailing Team to Misters Consistency during the 2011 Rolex Miami Olympic Classes Regatta, the only ISAF World Cup event in North America. The red-hot Canadians posted straight 6's during the first three races of the Grade 1 regatta. They were 8th in the fourth race. It is always difficult to stay at the top of a Star fleet, but with a fleet of 59 top gun teams from around the world fighting it out on Biscayne Bay staying in the top ten in every race and getting the same score is très rare!

Ocean changes unsettling to solo sailor
A Canadian sailing in a solo around-the-world race says he is disturbed by the "horrendous" conditions he has encountered in the southern oceans — including the near absence of large sea life. Derek Hatfield has rounded the planet alone twice before but this trip through the southern ocean has been a relentless stream of extreme storms and deepest calms.

2008 Mobility Cup
The 42 sailors who participated in August's Mobility Cup, held at the Pointe Claire Yacht Club near Montreal, may not have been expecting a galvanizing event. But that's precisely what it was for many of them. The experience was so motivating for Richard Dionne of Moncton, N.B., for instance, that he's vowed to train for the 2012 Paralympics in London.

Sharks Make a Splash on Lake Ontario
What does Ashbridge's Bay Yacht Club in Toronto have in common with the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, Nepean Sailing Club, Britannia Yacht Club and Kelowna Yacht Club? Each has done a fabulous job of hosting the annual CYA Women's National Keelboat Championship. This event occurs annually and is open to yacht clubs across Canada that are willing and able to host the event. This year, from September 11-14, ABYC played host to 27 all-female teams of sailors racing on Sharks. A strong volunteer committee led by Janice Sharpe of ABYC organized this year's event that started off with a day of onshore and offshore training.

2008 Lake Ontario 300 – A Personal View
Saturday morning finally comes; I have been rolling and tossing all night with much anticipation for the annual Solmar Lake Ontario 300 race. I kiss my family goodbye and head for the club. However, as I near the entrance, I gasp at my first sight of the lake; actually, I gasped because I couldn't even see the lake. Thick fog just sat there; not even a whisper of wind to push it out of the way. As a member of the organizing committee, I start to panic.

Acura Key West 2008
Every year for one glorious week in January, sailors from all over the world gather in the laid back town of Florida's Key West. This year the event was host to 260 boats from 18 different countries. There were 16 fleets in total, eight of which were one design fleets with the likes of Farr 40's, Mumm 30's and the largest fleet in the regatta Melges 24's competing. The other classes were the Melges 32, J/105, J/80, Swan 42, and the Corsair 28R. There was also a large number of handicapped racing, as well PHRF fleets 1 through 6 and the IRC 1 and 2 had some fierce competition.

Not Your Normal Regatta
Our boat heels and bow waves crash over her. She rides the waves like a rollercoaster gone berserk. Spray like shards of glass glitters in the tropical sunlight. "High side," yells the skipper, a seaman from Petit Martinique with the evocative name of Emmanuel Bethel. We scramble to starboard while "Savvy" overtakes another boat. It's stocky instead of graceful, solid instead of sleek. But it, too, slices the sea.

Vendee Globe… Countdown to the Start
Once in a lifetime, opportunities are sometimes easy to miss. I have been volunteering for Spirit of Canada for several years, so when I got the chance to go to the start of the Vendee Globe, I saw my chance and took it; missing this event wasn't an option.
