3rd Annual Boating For The Cure Raises Over $100 000

Boating for the Cure is a daylong family style poker run around the Muskoka Lakes raising funds equally for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and Prostate Cancer Canada.

In November of 2010 we set a goal of raising $100 000 in the 2011 event. With a lot of hard work from many sponsors, participants and donors we were able to reach our goal and raise just over $102 000. We started the fundraising off with a boat auction in January raising over $38 000 and kept the ball rolling with help from our sponsors.

Through on air advertisements, an auction and PSAs the Evanov Radio Group raised over $21 000. Bill Evanov and the Evanov Radio Group which consists of the Jewel FM channels and Z103 have been a huge help over the past three years and we are grateful for their continued support.

Sponsors Pride Marine Group, Edgewater Boats, Muskoka Woods, Northstar Insurance, Muskoka Meats, Crownline Boats, The Bay St. Bull, Lake of Bays Brewery, Muskoka Springs, The Simply Bar, Chaparral Boats, Don’s Bakery, North West Restaurant and J&E Audio Visual helped both with donations and overall awareness of the event.

All participants showed up despite it being an overcast rainy day. We had a great day on the lakes with a stop at Pride of Rosseau for a BBQ sponsored by Muskoka Meats, Don’s Bakery and Muskoka Springs. Not only was the food great, the entertainment was outstanding. Stephen Stanley of the Lowest of the Low made the trek up north to join us for lunch and provided us with a wonderful performance. Thank you very much to Stephen for joining us and providing us with such a great show.

We were fortunate enough to make it over to the new North West Restaurant in Gravenhurst for appetizers and a warm up. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was quite relaxing. We finally finished our day with Lake of Bays Brewery and Muskoka Meats back at the Wharf. It was a great end to a day on the lakes. The team representing Muskoka Watersports, received a 4some of golf, donated by Bigwin Island Golf Club, with the best poker hand.

Olympian Chris Cook joins CYA High Performance team

The Canadian Yachting Association is pleased to announce the appointment of Chris Cook to the new position of Development Team Manager. Chris is a high performing Finn sailor who finished 5th in the 2008 Olympic Games and had numerous , podium finishes at International and North American based championships including a recent Bronze Medal finish at the World Cup Event in Palma in 2012. Chris was on target to compete in his 2nd games this year until struck by illness in the final trial. His immediate support for his fellow Finn sailor, Greg Douglas, who benefitted most from Chris’s withdrawal, was a display of his high quality sportsmanship.

If the sailing gods look fondly, the Kingston team's efforts to land the ISAF Worlds in 2014 will be a tremendous win for Canada and for the Americas. The awarding of this event will allow the foundation for building the sport that is needed so badly here. Jamie Fraser, Marianne Davis and Tim Irwin all are owed a huge vote of praise and thanks for creating such an impressive bid. We hope the very best for them and for all of us who want to see sailing grow.

London Olympics 2012 Day 5 for Canadian Sailing Team

We had stronger winds today at 20-25 knots from the SW. Perfect sailing conditions. There was even a little sun 🙂 The courses further from shore have quite large waves in the afternoon as the current from the tide was opposing the wind direction. This made from some fantastic rides for the 470, Finn and Star racing. Tomorrow should be back to the typical 10-15 knot range with possible gusts to 18. The Laser and Radial fleets had a day off today.

Nine teams complete for coveted York/Stolz Cup Match Race held at RCYC August 6-7 on the waters of Toronto Harbour.

Held in Sonars, these nine teams from Canada and the US completed a full round robin of 36 races on Saturday August 6th. Event organizer David Jarvis, provided excellent racing, equipment, and hospitality with Chris Cook rounding out the team as the Principal Race Officer.

Moving into Sunday Peter Wickwire lead the group with a flawless 8 wins, followed by Steve Lowry, and then a three way tie for third with Terry McLaughlin, Magnus Sandberg,

Bayfield Marine Turns 40 with Big April Events

Ron and Pat Reder started out in October 1984 across the road from where they are right now on the Bayfield River in Bayfield ON. The store front was about 10 x 20 and the rest of that side of the building was a stock room, wood finishing room, then behind that was more back stock and the lunchroom. Expanding every few years for the store front, then moving over to this new building five years ago, this year with Adam, Shelley, and Holly are carrying on the business.
